Buying a laptop capable of meeting the needs of an architecture student can be difficult. We are not normal! We need laptops that can do more than average. Architectural design now uses many different software to meet different needs. Most of the software we use is very resource intensive and as a result we need a powerful laptop to execute our architectural designs. While many laptops can run laptops like Revit or 3DS Max, it's important to note that they may not run it well. In a moment, we will break down all the factors you need to pay attention to when buying a laptop for architecture studies.

I'd also like to mention that I've been in a situation where I went to a store for advice on which laptop to buy and the sales assistant didn't fully understand the requirements for some of the build software we used Is. As a result, I was advised to buy a basic computer. This meant I had to upgrade very quickly because the engine just wasn't working. So, lesson learned. Doing your research is very important if you want to make an investment that will last - and give you as few headaches as possible!

The operating system manages all of the computer's software and hardware, including files, memory, and connected devices. Often the choice of operating system is somewhat vague and people have their own favourites. I know I definitely do. Let's look at the options.
Windows are certainly a historical favorite of most architectural offices in the UK. Although many companies are switching to a more design-driven OS X, the Windows operating system is still very widely used. One of the major advantages of Windows is that more software has been developed for Windows than for any other system. This also includes Revit. Autodesk Revit is yet to be released on the Mac operating system (at the time of this writing). Another advantage of Windows computers is that they are reasonably priced and there is a wide variety to choose from.
Apple is known for its beautiful design and excellent quality. Their operating system is the same as OS X. It is easy to use and comes with a variety of applications right out of the box which makes it a real pleasure to use. One issue, which I mentioned earlier, is that Revit is not currently available on OS X. What does this really mean? Well, for now you can run parallel programs to run Windows with OS X and install Revit on Windows. If you're considering doing so, check out these options:

If you don't want to buy analog software, you can actually run Windows directly from a Mac with Bootcamp. This is very useful, although switching between the two is more difficult and you will essentially have to shut down your machine when moving from OS X to Windows. MacBooks are cutting edge, have powerful processors, great graphics, and look great – all of which can cost a fortune! Many universities and colleges actually advise their students not to buy MacBooks for their studies - it's worth checking with your institution to see if they have any specific recommendations. I myself used a Mac throughout my studies, but I didn't use Revit or any program requiring Windows. If you can stick with AutoCAD, ArchiCad, Sketchup, Photoshop, V-Ray and the like - you can get by with a Mac - but make sure you know your options. Technical Support - Some universities have some form of IT support, often with no Apple involved. This can be frustrating, so if you're thinking about getting a Mac and aren't an Apple geek, and think you might need some help, make sure your college offers Mac support.
In case you think I missed it, of course Chrome OS is also developed by Google for its own Chromebooks. Chromebook doesn't support Adobe, so no Photoshop. Unfortunately, they are by no means powerful enough for serious construction work!

I sometimes feel that the software requirements are the minimum requirements and wherever possible I would go with a higher spec than recommended. I have made mistakes with previous purchases where the laptop is not powerful enough and it crashes/freezes constantly. So with that in mind – here are our recommendations in no particular order:
The bottom line is getting the best you can afford. If you're considering going Mac - just be aware that Revit and 3DS Max are not available on Mac (as of this writing). You can use Parallels or Boot Camp which is fine but makes things a bit more difficult. I guess it just depends on how much Mac geek you are - in my case, having a Mac is worth it!

This is a quick overview of the minimum recommended specifications, as outlined in the system requirements below.
At least 2GB of discrete/dedicated memory - NVIDIA and Radeon are good options - many software are looking for 4GB - get what you can.
The more pixels you have, the sharper your screen will look. Try going for a higher pixel count of 1600x900 or 1920x1080 - the more graphics work you'll be doing, the more it's worth splashing out on a laptop with a good screen. If weight isn't an issue, go for a larger screen size if possible, with 15 to 17 inches being better for portability and draft. If you can, try to go UHD, 4K or 5K if you want to future proof your machine.

LED backlighting can display bright colors well without draining battery life. If you choose a laptop with a glossy screen, you'll find that it typically displays darker colors and deeper blacks, while a matte screen tends to reduce brightness, especially if you like to work outside or your workstation is a Near the window.
Processor is the brain of the computer. A powerful processor will make your laptop run faster and save you a lot of headaches waiting for apps to load, or struggling to navigate 3D models with Shadow!
Intel is at the heart of all modern MacBooks and many Windows laptops. The most common is the core chain.
Core i7: A high-end processor from Intel, and the processor of choice for really demanding software such as 3D modeling, rendering, and similar tasks performed by architecture students.
What Should I Consider When Buying A Laptop For University?
Core i5: A mid-range processor, and typically seen in most mainstream laptops. It's very powerful, but it can struggle if you have a lot of apps open, all of which have high demands.
Core M: OK for surfing the web and checking email, but not powerful enough for what we're looking for!
FX: This is the top of AMD's range and the Core i7 sits around the Core i5 range. Great for heavy multitasking, perfectly tailored to architecture student needs.
A8: Still striving for good graphics performance, but that's really what I aim for
