At the same time, troubling stories are emerging from countries like China, where some US returnees have faced challenges entering the local job market and are even disadvantaged compared to home-educated students.

To spark conversations on campus and provide a bird's-eye view of the topic, WES surveyed 1,067 current international students and 1,095 international students studying in the US on an F-1, J-1 or M-1 visa. We were able to segment many of the results by most regions of origin, academic levels, and whether the field of study was in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) field.

Last year, research we conducted on international student experiences highlighted a key finding: international students who are satisfied with their US institution are significantly more likely to recommend it to their peers. This shows that international student recruitment and the student experience on campus are intertwined. This year, we asked respondents again about their satisfaction levels and found a similar finding: a large majority of current international students and international alumni believed that their education in the US was a good investment. A strong majority – 92 percent of current students and 89 alumni – said they agreed or strongly agreed with the notion.
However, we found that slightly fewer students, although still the vast majority, rated their career prospects positively. 85 percent of current students and 88 percent of former students agreed or strongly agreed. Fortunately, most students seem to be confident about their education and career prospects, but the latter is less certain for some.
