Is The Macbook Pro Good For College - It's August and back-to-school shopping is just around the corner. At the top of the list is usually a new laptop. With so many options, it can be difficult to decide which laptop is best for you or your student.
In the Apple lineup, there are three laptop options – MacBook, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. Below I compare three configurations of these models. I matched your specifications as closely as possible. Each configuration has a 256GB solid-state drive and 8GB of RAM. I don't recommend a 128GB solid state drive configuration because it's easy for most students to run out of space too quickly. As you will see, there are pros and cons to each, but I have a general recommendation.
Is The Macbook Pro Good For College
The new 12" MacBook with Retina display scores for its elegant style and design… but that's about it. The slim profile makes the laptop feel very delicate and unstable to type on. The laptop's USB-C port makes it a Making it impractical for many students who want to charge their computer and use a USB drive at the same time. Another disadvantage is the high price and slow processor. The 12-inch MacBook starts at $1,299.
The 8 Best Laptops For College Students In 2022
MacBook Air - 1.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 13" display (also 11" as pictured above), $1199
The MacBook Air is a huge value improvement over the MacBook 12. You get up to 12 hours of USB and Thunderbolt ports and very long battery life for the 13” MacBook Air. You also get a more powerful processor for less money. The MacBook Air is lightweight without being bulky. It also retains the magnetic charging port that the new MacBook is missing. This feature has saved many laptops from being destroyed after tripping over a power cord. The only downside is the non-Retina display, which isn't a big deal if you don't mind the low resolution.
MacBook Pro Retina - 2.7GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 13" display (15" also available), $1,499
The more expensive option, the MacBook Pro 13" retina, comes with a high-powered processor and a beautiful screen. It is the best choice for students who need more intensive processing of school work, especially for photography, video and other design work. The Retina display offers crisp picture quality and the availability of HDMI, SD, Thunderbolt and USB ports make it a capable multi-tasking machine.
Macbook Pro 13.3
*Note: I haven't reviewed the non-Retina MacBook Pro because Apple hasn't updated the model since 2012, nor does it come with a standard solid-state drive. The non-Retina MacBook Pro doesn't compete with the other current technology that Apple has in the rest of its laptop lineup.
General recommendation: For high school students and juniors, I recommend the MacBook Air 13" or 11". This laptop offers good value, great battery life and solid performance to meet the needs of young students. For students in college and beyond, I recommend
🇧🇷 This is a strong and durable laptop that will last for years to come. It has the versatility and functionality to handle more advanced tasks.
Extra savings! Don't forget to take advantage of Apple's educational discounts on laptops for college students, staff, and administration. Best Buy offers similar discounts on Apple laptops for students. You can sign up for Best Buy college student deal coupons, which usually take $100 off the purchase price.
Why I Chose The Macbook Air Over The Macbook Pro As A Data Scientist
When I went to college 10 years ago, my trusty laptop was a PowerBook G4 12″. This is one of my favorite macs of all time. It is still fully functional. I reviewed the 12" MacBook Retina back in May comparing two 12" MacBook laptops. It's summer, and that means we're back to school. Here are the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models you should consider buying from the seasonal sale before students head off to college.
An annual sales event for many retailers, back-to-school is heralded as a time when parents prepare for their children's next year of education and, often, young adults heading off to college. This often involves paying for new computer equipment, and this is where Apple comes in.
Apple's MacBook Air and MacBook Pro lineup is impressive, covering both the premium and value end segments of the market with the right hardware for every task. From basic tasks like writing reports to processor-intensive applications for college work.
Here are Apple's recommendations on which MacBook models you should consider if you're in the market for a new portable Mac for the students in your family.
Best Ipad For Students 2022: Which Ipad To Buy For School, College Or Uni
If you need a budget notebook that can handle multiple tasks, it's hard to go wrong with the MacBook Air.
With the same brains as its 13-inch MacBook Pro counterpart, the MacBook Air offers all the features and capabilities a student needs. Everything from completing book reports to joining Zoom calls.
However, while you might expect us to recommend the new M2-equipped MacBook Air with all these new features, it's not necessarily the best way to go if you're talking about value. It has the latest chip and many improvements over the previous model, but you can still get the M1 version.
In fact, in modern times where price is so important, families may feel like they could do more with the $200 price difference between the base $999 M1 version and the $1,199 M2 variant. That $200 could pay for other items or some college meals.
The 6 Best Laptops For College In 2022
The base M1 MacBook Air has two configurable upgrades, covering memory and storage. The base model offers 8GB of memory, an upgrade of 16GB, and 256GB of storage with upgrades of 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB.
The economic recommendation would generally be to skip updates or select memory first and then store as needed. There are external storage options such as an external hard drive or flash drive for the latter.
If needed, upgrade to 16GB of memory from $200. This is a notebook that will be used for several years, so you'll want it to last as long as possible, and it's not something you can upgrade later.
We have already established that the MacBook Air is a very capable notebook. The M2 version is probably the best option for the midrange category.
Best Macbook For Students In 2022
More expensive than the M1 MacBook Air, the M2 MacBook Air adds a lot to the mix for relatively little extra cash. For starters, you get a little more screen by loading MagSafe 3, a better FaceTime HD 1080p camera, and a magic keyboard to use.
Then there's the M2 chip, which is faster than the M1, with better GPU and memory upgrade options, but it also has a Media Engine. Borrowed from the M1 Pro and M1 Max, the M2 Media Engine encodes and decodes video much faster than usual CPU-based methods.
This is very useful for video editing and video-related projects, which are becoming more common in classrooms. Students who work with film may still want a more powerful model than the M2 MacBook Air.
Starting at $1,199, you get a solid foundation to build on with an 8-core GPU, 8GB of memory, and 256GB of storage. You can upgrade to the 100-core GPU version for $100, but only if you think the extra graphics power will come in handy and you have the extra funds.
Macbook Air 2022 Vs. Macbook Pro: How To Pick The Right Macbook
Integrated memory upgrades from 8GB to 16GB and 24GB, while storage starts at 256GB and goes up to 512GB, 1TB and 2TB. Since memory greatly affects performance, focus on upgrading before paying for storage.
At this price, it's reasonable to opt for the low-end storage upgrade even if you don't need to use an external drive, but you always have the option to do so to avoid high refresh rates.
The recommendation will be a 10-core GPU, 16GB of memory and 512GB of storage, for a total of $1,699.
This set also gives you a 35W dual-port compact USB-C power adapter or a 67W USB-C power adapter. Either one is useful, but the latter is probably better if you have enough power adapters for more. Speed up your MacBook Air.
Would A Macbook Air 2017 Work For A College Student In 2022? Thoughts?
If money is no object or if you have enough budget set aside to buy a Mac, then you should check out the 14-inch MacBook Pro.
The 16-inch MacBook Pro is also available and comes with similar configurations, albeit of a larger size. However, you can save $200 and some weight and bag space by choosing an equally good smaller model.
At this level, you will also take advantage of many features that will be very useful for advanced users. This 14-inch display is the one, as it is a Liquid Retina XDR display with small LED backlighting for 1,600 nit peak brightness for HDR content, a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and support for HDR.
So you have plenty of ports at your disposal, including an SD card reader, an HDMI port, and a MagSafe for charging.
