Matching data from the 2017 Matching is available for PGY-1 positions (categorical programs that include an internship) and PGY-2 positions (traditional programs that begin at PGY-2 and require the trainee to be matched separately with an internship)
As you can see from the figures above, it is not easy for IMGs (American citizens and not) who answer directly in the DR / IR integrated residency (blue box). In 2017, IMGs filled 0 of 29 (0%) PGY-1 positions and 3 of 95 (3%) PGY-2 positions. Due to the increased demand among American medical students, the new integrated DR/IR pathway has become quite competitive, one of the most competitive for the 2018 Game.
Recognizing this, another option would be to apply and apply for a PGY-2 Diagnostic Radiology position with the ESIR program, and then continue training in the new 1-year residency ("old fellowship") . IMGs filled 121 of 932 Diagnostic Radiology positions (13% of available positions) in 2017. In addition, 15 positions were not filled through the Match and were made available through SOAP (see the dedicated chapter for more details) .
As IMGs who have successfully matched with DR positions and/or are applying for IR scholarships or are matched with IR scholarships, we believe that prospective IMG applicants should absolutely apply TO STUDY BOTH integrated DR and DR/IR programs to increase your chances. The new DR/IR program is a competitive specialty: a non-allopathic graduate matching with primary care specialties (eg, internal medicine, family medicine) is almost 2-4 times as likely to match in the radiology.

BUT don't let this distract you from following your dream. If you are truly passionate about IR, you may just need to make changes to your strategy and put more work into building your credentials. Reading this thread is a great start and hopefully a good asset in your quest.
Comparing the credentials of matched and unmatched Diagnostic Radiology applicants in 2016, NRMP presented the following data:
US IMGs: US IMGs are individuals who are US citizens upon graduation from an international medical school. Non-US IMGs: people who are not US citizens at the time of medical school graduation are non-US IMGs, even if they become IMGs later. US Citizens Non-US citizens who graduate from medical schools in the United States and Canada are not IMGs.
We will focus on Non-U.S. IMGs. Based on the data presented above, the most consistent factors in increasing the chances of being accepted as an IMG are high USMLE Scores (Step 1 > Step 2 CK) and research. Notably, the only advantage American IMGs have over non-U.S. IMGs are able to apply to programs that do not sponsor visas, which increases their number of applications.

The step 1 score is of particular importance and its value is directly correlated with the likelihood of agreement. This is shown in the graph below for the probability of a match in Diagnostic Radiology in 2016 based on the USMLE Step 1 score. A non-U.S. An IMG applicant with a score greater than 220 had a little more than a 50% chance (about 50%).
The second most important topic to discuss for a successful application is research. Although the NRMP does not specify what "research experiences" actually means, but we can assume that corresponds to research options or even full semesters, perhaps laboratory / bench experience experiences. Matched and non-matched IMGs experienced 2.6 and 3.0, respectively; one can finally conclude that research experiences are not (usually) a decisive factor in the selection process. What is important to note, instead, is how much more matched IMGs had in terms of abstracts, presentations and publications compared to non-matched IMGs: 14.2 vs. 8.3, respectively. Although 14 research projects is an incredible amount for the corresponding group, 8 research projects completed is also a small thing, and they are not easily achieved without dedication and hard work. This shows how important research is to matching, but second only to Step 1 scoring.
Planning as early as possible will make your trip more difficult, but you will achieve better results in a shorter amount of time.
In other words, to start residency in July 2020, you must submit your full application through ERAS in September 2019.

In a nutshell, ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service) is the online system/portal through which applicants submit their applications for programs. Interested programs will then go through ERAS to invite the candidate for an interview (see "The Match" section for more details). Classified submission is done through another system, the NMRP.
In summary, to make your Radiology (DR/IR and/or DR) application competitive, you must have the following by September:
After the journey of many IMGs who made it into competitive specialties, we know for a fact that each of them had a different journey. Choose what works best for you. Most agree on the following:
USMLE EXAMS: Don't rush your USMLE exams. Anyone can pass, but only high scores stand out. Great scores get you more interviews, open more doors and get you into the system more easily. Scoring low on your grades isn't the end of the world, but you'll need to put in extra effort to make up for it. Take your time to study, do as many question banks as you can, and don't go into an exam unless you have taken several sample tests and are happy with the estimates. Try to take the degrees in your home country, it will make it easier to study, because in general you are more comfortable economically and there are fewer things to worry about.

Rotation / Clerk / INTRODUCTION: Important as a trainee and applicant. The purpose of US based rotations is to network and get letters of recommendation - you will need 3 to apply for the matching process. All the IMGs who contributed to this guide agree that networking is probably the most important factor in your application. You may have a high Step 1 score and someone may notice you among the hundreds of other applications they are reviewing, knowing that one point on your application will go a long way .
How to do this? Network at conferences and meetings with residents and attendees, join the SIR Residents and Fellows section and/or email program directors or attend a program you are interested in and just ask. Keep that in mind
