Since we began giving pro bono awards, our most prestigious individual award has been our Pro Bono Attorney of the Year. This award recognizes an attorney whose life and practice has served as a unique inspiration over the past year to dedicate or renew volunteer legal work on behalf of our most vulnerable people. This recipient understands the importance of bringing justice to those most in need. This winner began his legal career as a trainee lawyer in a legal advice center. He is a litigator specializing in family law, estate planning and personal injury. Despite busy cases, he currently works on 8 active pro bono matters and regularly volunteers for our Family Law Ask-A-Lawyer program and our partners in the pro bono program; Guidance for law students in active cases. The 2021 recipient was a consistent, impressive supporter of Pro Bono. Our award winner has taken on 14 new pro bono cases over the past year in a variety of practice areas including divorce, name changes and our newest program, minor guardianship. The award is presented in memory of Vince Consul, a lawyer and volunteer advocate for access to justice who died in 2010. We honor his memory by presenting this award to an attorney who embodies the very best in our profession. who has done everything to assist clients in civil matters. Through the Legal Aid Center and the federal pro bono program, the 2021 recipients accepted representation for eight inmates who are being denied treatment for hepatitis C, along with hundreds of other Nevada inmates. Our bankruptcy trustees, members of different firms, joined forces and filed a class action lawsuit in federal court. He negotiated a settlement for the treatment of all affected Nevada prisoners. The monetary value of his work was about $30 million. More importantly, their work has saved the lives of some helpless members of our society. Remarkably, they accomplished all of this without actually meeting before the Pro Bono Awards Luncheon! Every year we award a prize in memory of Louis Wiener. Louis was a prominent local attorney who cared deeply about our community and was one of the first attorneys in our community to volunteer to help victims of domestic violence. He's been a passionate pro bono all his life. The 2021 Louie Wiener Pro Bono Service Award recipient has done it all by being passionate about helping survivors of domestic violence. She took on many cases and volunteered for 17 Ask-A-Lawyer family law sessions. Congratulations, Alyssa Aklestad, on the 2021 Louis Wiener Pro Bono Service Award.
Each year we present the Myrna Williams Children's Pro Bono Award to a volunteer who has done outstanding work representing many of our children's clients. This award is given in honor of Myrna, who has campaigned for women's and children's rights at the legislature and county level for years and helped us establish our children's advocacy project. The 2021 winner, who grew up in Las Vegas, runs a personal injury firm. Although he is an active member of the Clark County Bar Association and participates in many outreach events, he still makes time to help his clients. During that year he volunteered more than 300 hours representing abused and neglected children. Congratulations, Atif Shaikh, on the 2021 Myrna Williams Children's Pro Bono Award.

The Volunteer Education Advocate Award is presented to a volunteer who is not an attorney and is aggressively campaigning for educational rights and opportunities for at-risk foster children. The 2021 awardee distinguished himself for his commitment and advocacy in the field. He currently works at a criminal defense firm and will begin his law degree at the University of Texas at Austin next fall. He always wants our most difficult nursing cases, medically weak students or students with high needs and closed facilities. He treats these students with respect while passionately fighting for their educational needs. Congratulations to our 2021 Volunteer Education Advocate, Jordan Shook.
The Public Interest Law Student of Distinction Award recognizes a law student who has made a significant contribution to society through working in the public interest and promoting access to justice. Our 2021 recipient is a third-year honors student at Boyd. She is a Public Interest Fellow, a senior contributor to the Nevada Law Journal, past president and current vice president of finance for the Public Interest Law Association, and was events director for the Association of Women Law Students. Member of the Fair and Inclusive Law School Committee, the Nevada Supreme Court Access to Justice Commission and current President of the Student Bar Association. Congratulations to our 2021 Public Interest Law student, Greer Sullivan.
The 2021 Ask-A-Lawyer Community Commitment Award recipient has volunteered at 25 Ask-A-Lawyer meetings with small claims and tenants. This attorney was notable for his willingness to jump in immediately and his attitude to do everything in his power to keep tenants. He offered advice to those trying to avoid evictions, guided renters on how to submit a response and explained how to apply for rental assistance to ensure they don't get locked out during the pandemic.
