Google Fiber is the fastest internet provider in the United States and consistently offers its customers the fastest speeds. With a published top speed of up to 2,000 Mbps and a 12-month download speed of 167.1 Mbps, the fiber provider earns an Integrated Speed Score (ISS) of 185.2.
ISS is a way to measure internet speed. It is based on a combination of 90% of the average download speed and 10% of the provider's equivalent speed. We obtained the data based on information from 2.6 million speed tests run with our internet speed test tool from June 1st, 2021 to June 1st, 2022.
Despite only being available in 19 cities, Google's premium fiber service has been the fastest internet provider since 2018, beating all competitors every year.
But other contributors have also shown interesting data. Xfinity is the second fastest ISP with an advertised top speed of up to 3,000 Mbps and an ISS of 159.6. Verizon, MetroNet, and AT&T all follow with scores ranging from 145.7 to 155.4.

A growing number of fiber and cable network providers are attempting to raise their network plans to new multigigabit heights. AT&T and Ziply both offer 2,000 Mbps and 5,000 Mbps plans in select areas. Xfinity has a very powerful (but hard to find) plan that goes up to 6,000Mbps. Google Fiber and Frontier also have 2,000 Mbps plans. Smaller providers like Advanced Stream and Miles Broadband offer 10,000 Mbps plans.
Most internet providers offer a maximum speed of 940-1000 Mbit/s. Anything faster isn't necessary for most internet users - and high prices and limited availability can put some of these plans out of reach. Even 1,000 Mbps is a distance, and most people have very slow speeds. But from this process to the high speed, it becomes clear that high bandwidth is a big selling point for internet users who spend a lot of time on the internet every year.
Take our speed test to see what kind of bandwidth you have at home. You may be better off with a quick plan.

Between 2018 and 2021, the top online retailers in the US experienced annual growth. We tracked the progress of 16 ISPs over this period and all saw significant improvements in average speed performance.
Fiber optic ISPs in particular have made huge gains over the past five years. In 2018, Google Fiber was one of only two ISPs with average download speeds in excess of 90Mbps. In 2021, Google Fiber average download speed was up to 164 Mbps, exceeding the national average.

Some providers have made significant gains by moving away from DSL services and focusing more on fiber optic networks.
DSL is widespread but has relatively slow speeds of up to 100Mbps, and the number of DSL subscribers has declined in recent years. Fiber optic availability is severely limited across the country. But internet companies are expanding their networks because they are very powerful - fiber speeds are usually higher than 1,000 Mbps, but sometimes they reach even more, multigigabit speeds.
Verizon has scaled back its DSL offerings in recent years as it rolls out thousands of miles of fiber-optic cable in new markets, in part to support its Fios network packages but also to expand its 5G cellular network.
Meanwhile, average download speeds on Verizon Fios plans have increased significantly -- from 85 Mbps in 2018 to 145 Mbps in 2019.

AT&T is also interested in DSL again. The company suspended its DSL service in October 2020, and in March 2022 the regulator announced plans to phase out half of its DSL network by 2025 to open up fiber and 5G.
Meanwhile, average download speeds have increased nearly 200%, from 40 Mbps in 2018 to 117 Mbps in 2021. (See the next section below for more on AT&T speeds).
Although fiber internet providers are often also DSL providers, it is unlikely that a large number of DSL customers will switch to a fiber internet connection. Dial-up Internet is the least common type of Internet connection in the United States, and experts believe that in the DSL era, consumers will be inclined to switch to broadband - a method that has been practiced for at least a decade.
As for new fiber customers, many of them previously had broadband and are finally switching thanks to faster speeds and cheaper prices.
How To Check Your Internet Speed
The internet connection is also fast. The average download speed on Xfinity has doubled from 66 Mbps to 143 Mbps from 2018 to 2021. Cox also made a big jump from 51 Mbit/s (2018) to 135 Mbit/s (2021).
When it comes to bandwidth, cable can't compete with fiber. Gigabit plans are not as widely available for wired connections as they are for fiber, and gigabit cable plans are typically more expensive. Cable also lags behind fiber in upload speed. With a wired connection, uploads typically account for only 10% of download speeds, while fiber is the only type of connection that offers the same upload and download speeds.
But coaxial cable connections are more common than fiber optic connections across the country, and ISPs have made technological advances in recent years to facilitate this process. Beginning in 2013, the introduction of DOCSIS 3.1 — a technology standard that enables high-speed transmission of Internet data over coaxial cable TV sets — paved the way for gigabit download speeds over wired connections. More recently, the pandemic has forced major cable providers like Xfinity and Cox to offer faster options to meet growing consumer needs.
Of all the providers we looked at, only two have been flat or declining over the last four years - HughesNet and Viasat. Both are satellite internet providers, suggesting internet speeds in rural areas lag behind national standards. The stagnation of DSL services hasn't helped rural customers either, although new services like 4G LTE and Starlink networks could potentially improve speeds in more remote parts of the country.
