As tourism expands across the Las Vegas Valley, several companies are scrambling to fill hundreds of jobs to keep up.
Relocating To Las Vegas From The Bay Area
Several operators have launched hiring events in recent weeks: Circa Casino Resort in downtown Las Vegas, for example, is stopping hiring drivers at this month's event, while MGM Resorts International is holding job fairs every Wednesday until further notice. At the job fair last week, the company hired more than 100 people on the spot.
Local company leaders say these efforts will ease staff shortages and help them prepare for further business growth that is expected to go hand-in-hand with restrictions on the release of COVID-19 in the coming months.
"We don't want to be in a position where we can open all the restaurants and open them in 100 percent of our property, but we don't have enough people to serve our guests the way we want to serve them," said Randy Goldberg, MGM. VP of talent acquisition strategy. "He's trying to get ahead of us."
Goldberg said MGM's hiring efforts had been ongoing since the beginning of the year, but it actually began taking off four weeks ago. The airline will have to deal with a staffing shortage in recent weeks as passengers have started to return in droves.

"There's no doubt we're probably a little bit stretched," Goldberg said. "I don't think anybody's going to grow that fast."
The recruitment effort quickly came to fruition: Goldberg said new hires could be on the job as early as a week after the initial offer. The recent flurry of hiring will help fill the pool for the upcoming season, but Goldberg said recruiting efforts should continue in the coming months.
"Going forward, we know other positions will be needed," Goldberg said. "Things move so fast."
Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, the newest resort near the Strip, has scheduled calls for pool and club days on Thursdays and Fridays. Richard "Boz" Bosworth, president and CEO of the group that owns Virgin Hotels, JC Hospitality LLC, said Thursday's event had a "tremendous" turnout.

The property plans to hire more than 400 workers in four weeks as additional restaurants come online. Hiring by hotel casinos and third-party suppliers will continue until June 1, according to Gov. Steve Sisolak set out to reopen the entire state to 100 percent capacity.
"Bringing in these team members and opening more of these restaurants when the market isn't fully open is probably not going to be good for anybody," Bosworth said. "But now we see limitations. And we certainly see a lot more business in the property. ... We expect it to grow significantly and continue for the next six weeks.
A spokesperson for Boyd Gaming Corp. David Straw said the company is "certainly hiring now" and is "actively filling many positions" at properties across southern Nevada. The company has two job fairs scheduled for the next few weeks and is looking to hire for security, food and beverage and security jobs. Jobs are offered on the spot for recruiting purposes.
A spokesman for Red Rock Resorts said the company has repatriated "over" 2,300 employees and will continue to repatriate and retrench staff.

According to the most recent employment data from the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation, job growth in the hotel and hospitality sector in Nevada has outpaced that of other industries.
In Las Vegas, unsecured wages rose a seasonally adjusted 0.9 percent between February and March, while leisure and hospitality rose 2 percent over the same time period.
Job growth between February and March is typical of leisure and entertainment, as frequent workers hire temporary pool workers, but DETR chief financial officer David Schmidt said in a statement that the March numbers were "encouraging", especially due to increased energy in catering companies for capacity. are paid by prescription.

Casino tables and other venues in Nevada are operating at 50 percent capacity under state orders, but restrictions are expected to ease further next month. Clark County officials have proposed raising the occupancy limit to 80 percent by May 1, and Nevada Gaming Control Board officials have said that various occupancy purchases could begin in May as well. Both authorities say their decisions depend on vaccination.
The unemployment rate in Las Vegas is improving, but still well below pre-pandemic levels. The city's economy grew 9.3 percent in February, compared with 3.6 a year earlier, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.
While there is still a significant number of residents to work with, the head of the town's Fremont Street Experience said the entertainment district is struggling to fill certain venues.
Fremont Street is expected to hire between 50 and 60 people in jobs including social media, operations and ride security.

But there is competition in the job market: Simon noted that the city center as a whole has hundreds of vacancies across all properties. Hotel casinos, including Circa and the Golden Nugget, recently leased properties, and other properties, such as Four Queens and Binion, have long job listings posted on their websites.
The Fremont Street experience has taken "some time" to hire, trying its luck through fairs, referral programs and marketing efforts, Simon said. There are still places open.
"We're trying to demand that people come back," said Simon. "We want to be even more prompt, so we hope you come on June 1."
Economist Jeremy Aguero said the problem has been seen in various industries over the past few months, from logistics to service industries and the hospitality industry. As the business begins to recover and expands the scope of the occupation, that moment results in an exit.
What Are The Most Common Jobs In Las Vegas, Nv?
"We see a large number of workers who seem to remain on the sidelines, either by choice or necessity," said Aguero, principal analyst at Journal Analyst.
Some workers remain concerned that returning to work amid the pandemic could put their health and safety at risk. Some have decided to stay at home because their children are studying further away. Others are less motivated to return because of unemployment insurance benefits; The Biden administration is proposing a $300 weekly boost to unemployment insurance through September 6.
Aguero added that he expects the situation to improve in the coming months, so that more workers can be vaccinated and unemployment benefits can be reduced.
"I think there will be some who sit at the extreme limits for a while because they have health issues or something like that. That part of the workforce will simply be reduced," Aguero said.
Right To Return' Bill Would Guarantee Laid Off Hospitality Employees The Opportunity To Return To Their Old Jobs
About half of the 60,000 workers in Nevada represented by Cooks Local 226 and Bartenders Local 165, United Here, are still called to work, spokeswoman Bethany Kahn said.
"Unionized Cairns must bring back laid-off workers as tourism levels rise due to COVID-19," Kahn said in the email, adding that older workers will be reinstated. "Understanding is not good for customers, workers or the company." The Culinary Union will continue to advocate for as many workers as possible to return to work."
Goldberg said MGM has brought back most of the workers who were hired or replaced after the casino closed in March 2020, but also had to walk through.
