Since 1979, our organization has matched more than 100,000 international students with homestay families in the United States. Here are answers to some of the most common questions we receive about accepting foreign exchange students.
Host families provide the student with board and lodging and are expected to treat their student as a member of the family and not as a guest. Students are responsible for their own travel expenses, medical insurance, school fees, mobile phone and other expenses. EF and the US Department of State also establish certain requirements for all homestays. For example, host parents must be at least 25 years of age or older, pass a background check, and have a suitable stable family. Let us know your interest and we'll help you determine if your family meets the requirements of the program.

Our families represent the diversity of American culture, and we encourage families of all shapes and sizes to apply. There is no such thing as a "normal" host family, some families have young children or teenagers while others are single or newlyweds. Our families include singles, same-sex couples and grandparents and we consider them all wonderful hosts. What matters most to us is a caring family, a suitable and calm environment and a desire to welcome foreign exchange students in your daily life.
Host families are not provided. According to the US Department of State, host families cannot reap any financial benefit from participating in the exchange student program. This policy is designed to ensure that host families are participating in the program for the right reasons. However, in recognition of their role as citizen ambassadors, host families may be entitled to a tax deduction on their tax return.

Why Become A Host Family?
Moving abroad is not easy for many children or students. That's why it's important to build relationships with students (if they want to). You must live, walk and speak in a new land full of different people, customs and traditions. Try to cook them English dishes or introduce them to the food of their home country. You can also show some local sights or take a trip to the beach.
If you have children, encourage them to be like a brother or sister. Not only does it help students feel relaxed and part of the family, but it's also a great experience for your kids. You can learn about other countries and culture and maybe even learn some words in a new language. Being an international student is rewarding for both your family and the student.
Don't expect a foreign student to behave the way you think they will, because they won't. Every child has a different parenting style and different rules. Establishing ground rules when hosting a foreign student doesn’t have to be a awkward conversation. Your guests will appreciate what is right and wrong and how not to overstep it online.
It is almost inevitable that most foreign students will get bored at some point during their stay. That's to be expected, but you can make it easier for them by cooking their native food and doing activities they're familiar with. Teach them what they like to do with their family at home. Try something fun like playing bowling or mini-golf to create a great bonding experience
