Student Transportation of America, which transports Duval County students to and from class, is encouraging parents to sign up and become drivers.
Pete Conway is STA's Area General Manager and says the ongoing bus driver shortage is nothing new, safety is always a priority.
"We can take a parent with no experience and turn them into safe, productive bus drivers in about eight weeks," Conway said.
STA is looking to hire 100 new drivers. Conway said STA offers paid training, which includes classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel driving. Parents can earn up to $3,000 in sign-on bonuses.

The Area General Manager said to make it easier for parents, their children can also come with them to work depending on their age.
"We're trying to tackle it from every possible angle," Conway said. "Currently, we are running several programs. We are looking to the community to be part of the solution."
Conway said bus driver wages start at about $16 an hour — and that number can increase based on experience. He reiterated that no previous experience is necessary. While he couldn't get into STA's exact safety record, he said it's one of the safest school bus companies in the industry.
Conway said it's an opportunity for parents to get involved in ways they never thought possible.

"We like to say that school bus driving has gotten to the point where it's a local issue in every community," Conway said. "If there's a shortage of bus drivers, it affects the moms and dads in that community. It allows parents in that particular community to be part of the solution to the problem.
Safety meetings are held once a month at the facility located at 5703 Commonwealth Avenue in Jacksonville. Interested parents can go directly to the facility to learn more about how to become a school bus driver.
"We hope to have more bus drivers soon," Conway said. "If we take those drives now, if we take our time to run them through our training program, they will be fully prepared and ready to start the next school year," Conway said. .
