Pros And Cons Of Choosing Mac Or Windows For Your Laptop
Not much has changed since Apple introduced the M1-powered MacBooks and Windows 11 last year. Apple has introduced the new M2 system-on-chip (SoC) with two laptops, including the new MacBook Air. Meanwhile, new PCs are being announced all the time, with this year's models usually powered by 12th Gen Intel processors or the latest AMD Ryzen chips.
While the move to ARM-based systems has been successful for Apple, the PC industry is still struggling to keep up, and Windows on ARM is hard to recommend. Snapdragon laptops can look and feel sleek, offer great battery life and built-in cellular radios, but they're usually expensive given their limited software compatibility.
In short, most high-end laptops these days can set you back between $1,800 and $2,000. However, a mid-range machine may be sufficient for most students. Depending on your course, you can get an Intel Core i3 processor or similar, with at least 6GB of RAM. If you need to run specialized software for planning or programming, consider upgrading to a system with more memory. On the other hand, if you do most of your classes online or in a browser, getting a Chromebook can save you a lot of money.
You'll also want to consider the weight of the device. There are many premium ultraportables in the 13-inch category, with chips like Intel's Core i3 or i5, priced around $1,000. If that's too expensive, there are options for you in the $600 to $800 range. but they can be heavier and use older, slower processors. I've included our favorite budget model in this roundup, but we have a full guide to more affordable laptops that you can check out as well.
First Tests: Are The Apple M1 Pro And M1 Max Good For Gaming?
Since some laptop manufacturers have decided to get rid of headphone jacks this year, it's important to check the spec lists when buying a newer device. If you don't have wireless headphones or don't use a 3.5mm jack, you'll want to steer clear of devices like Dell's new XPS 13 Plus.
As a result, while most laptops in 2022 will offer WiFi 6 or 6E and Bluetooth 5.0 or later, compatible routers or other devices that allow for faster connections are not that common.
