Do you know... the sound a flying rock makes when it hits glass? Depending on how loud it gets, the next thing you hear may be your heart pounding in your ears as you scan the landscape ahead, looking for a piece of rock. I hope the third voice is not for refugees.
As a former professional driving instructor, with many years of training motor vehicle operators in the big city, my inner autopilot keeps a very long distance. But there are times when there is no way to prevent a rock from hitting the front of your object. You cannot block other vehicles from passing you on multi-lane highways, and you cannot control oncoming traffic on secondary roads. When you spend a lot of time on the road, rock chips are a hazard from the terrain.

Whether the rock hits the glass compared to the chassis is a lucky draw. Of course, the windshield of a tall bus like ours tilts more in favor of the "glass" because the target is larger.
Earlier this year, a truck went through with a "light" that really made us jump. It sounded like the Rock of Gibraltar had just hit our windshield. We looked frantically, believing the glass to be broken, but found nothing. Maybe we were that lucky?
About half an hour later, forgetting about our meeting with "Gibraltar", we spotted it. Creeping behind the highest part of the dash, right behind the steering wheel, there it is - a crack over a meter long, starting at the very bottom of the glass (where the rock hit).
We didn't replace the windshield ourselves, we documented the process when a professional did the job. If you're on the west coast or in the desert southwest and need windshields, Mike Wilkinson of Wilkinson Glass did a great job for us and we highly recommend his services. It fits right into your site, so you don't have to move your trailer.

Nice new web page! I am in the process of replacing both the driver and passenger windshields here in the midwest. I got some tips from Mike Wilkinson, who is a prince for being so helpful. I have an '05MADP 4304 and would like to ask a question. In the 15+ years you've been traveling, traveling, harvesting, and more, have you ever had a broken windshield? If so, what are you doing now to avoid that fear? If not, do you have any driving tips for avoiding jumps?
Thanks, Patrick! And great taste in recreational vehicles! ? And sorry to hear you're having trouble with your windshield! With all the camping and camping we've done in Highland Aire over the past 15 years, we've never blown a windshield (knock on wood), so we don't have recommendations based on experience. We've certainly heard others (but not Newmar owners) have this problem (want a one-piece windshield on these vintage Winnebagos as well as the Monaco)... so here are some general suggestions/thoughts we can give you. .
Newmar Rv Windshield Replacement
First and foremost, be careful when lifting, don't torque the chassis. The HWH lift system should help prevent this (since the two jacks always move together... front/rear or left/right). However, if you tend to park your car on very uneven surfaces, you may be in trouble if you remove a single jack. For example, if you park where the nose of the trailer and the passenger side are too low, you need to raise the front passenger side the most. If this jack reaches the end of its extension, the other jack (front driver side if lifting the nose or rear passenger side if lifting the passenger side) will continue to lift...it will start to turn/torque the chassis. Get out because of the windshield. No glass! ? In this case, it's better to manually align than to let the automated system try...because it's more likely to continue trying to lift when one of them is raised.
