Wells Fargo offers three term certificates of deposit (CDs) with much lower APYs than other banks. Another drawback is the $2,500 minimum deposit, which may make Wells Fargo CDs affordable for some savers.

Wells Fargo received 3.2 out of 5 stars in the overall bank review, and its CDs received 2.5 out of 5 stars.

Wells Fargo offers standard rate CDs that require a minimum deposit of $2,500. You can also earn relationship rates on these CDs by linking a portfolio through a Wells Fargo checking account:

Note: The APY for each CD term is 0.02 percent for all balance levels. Annual Percentage Rate (APY) shown as of February 16, 2022 and may vary by region for some products

Wells Fargo offers three term options that can be helpful when planning your savings. However, APYs are negligible compared to CDs offered by other financial institutions. The best APYs on the market are between 0.65 percent and 0.85 percent APY on annual term CDs, which is much higher than the APYs offered by Wells Fargo.

If you have savings that you want to transfer to a CD, you may find a better option than Wells Fargo. Sallie Mae, Eli and Marcus are among Goldman Sachs' top bidders. Compare the best rates on CDs before investing in a low-yielding account.

Wells Fargo also offers retirement CDs, or IRA CDs, with terms ranging from three months to 12 years in monthly increments. An IRA CD can be opened with a $1,000 deposit, and relationship rates are also available. Besides CDs, Wells Fargo has two savings account options with access to a wide network of branches and ATMs, but with a comparatively lower APY.

U.s. Mortgage Rates Set To Tumble Next Year, Wells Fargo Says

Edited by David Shepp David Shepp Write Wealth Editor David Shepp is a wealth editor focusing on deposits and consumer banking content. Connect with David Shepp on Twitter David Shepp Wealth EditWells Fargo (NYSE:WFC) may not have reported a great quarter compared to previous years, but its 3Q results were still a lot better than the stock's 50% drop in the market . $24 per year. Major banks' capital ratios also rose during the quarter. My investment thesis is very bullish on the bank at these levels, confident that the new management team will improve financial performance going forward.

For the third quarter, Wells Fargo reported just $18.9 billion, down 14.3% from last year. At the same time, the bank's shares fell by an incredible 50% as the market feared more dire outcomes for the sector.

Instead, the big bank posted $2.0 billion in net income in what was expected to be a terrible quarter, prompting Wells Fargo to ask the Fed to cut their dividend. After adjusting the pre-tax results to exclude about $1.5 billion in net restructuring and customer acquisition charges in the quarter, the bank actually had a pre-tax profit of $4.1 billion. The company posted adjusted earnings per share of $0.75 on $3.1 billion in adjusted net income.

Whether you're looking at GAAP or non-GAAP numbers, Wells Fargo still had $15.2 billion, or more than 80% of revenue, in non-interest expenses. The efficiency ratio is very large in the banking sector with strong banks performing in the mid-50s.

Portfolio By Wells Fargo Checking Account (2022)

The bank recently touted a goal to cut annual operating costs by $10 billion, the equivalent of $2.5 billion a quarter. As can be seen, reducing the aforementioned costs by only $2.5 billion would reduce the efficiency ratio to only 67%.

Subtracting $1.5 billion in fees and $2.5 billion in expenses, the efficiency ratio falls below 60%. Essentially, the bank needs to increase profits while simultaneously reducing operating expenses from $10 billion to nearly $11 billion per quarter. At the same time, as interest rates normalize, net interest income will rebound to more than $11 billion for the quarter, similar to Q1 levels when LIBOR rates were another 1.5% lower.

The surprising part is that the stock is down ~4% in early trade despite the rise in the capital ratio. Wells Fargo now has a Common Equity Tier 1, or CET1, ratio of 11.4%. This ratio increased from 11.0% in the previous quarter and 10.7% in the first quarter.

Odds are high due to an 80% dividend cut to just $0.10 for the quarter. With 4.1 billion shares outstanding, Wells Fargo spends just $410 million per quarter on dividends against a dividend payout of $2.1 billion per quarter.

Top 10 Home Purchase Mortgage Lenders In Q2 2021

Technically, a bank has GAAP earnings to cover past dividends and non-GAAP numbers to support old dividends. The bank has many factors to push for higher interest rates, which ultimately increases net interest income while slowly reducing bank employee costs.

What is not clear to the market is that Wells Fargo is very profitable despitea tough economic environment and low interest rates, yet it is almost inefficient. The only real risk is high distribution costs.

The bank had only $769 million in provisioning expenses in the quarter, while Wells Fargo still had $20.5 billion in loan loss provisions. Customer forbearance and payment delays due to Covid-19 are delaying recognition of net write-offs and non-accrual status for large loans, according to the bank. Wells Fargo had just $8.2 billion in nonperforming assets, while the bank had $23.5 billion in consumer loans alone.
