Dentists in Germany are highly trained professionals and dental treatment follows very strict rules. The good thing is that dentists are not lacking in Germany. Although not guaranteed, many dentists in Germany speak some English. I have been to many different dentists in Germany so far and almost all of them speak some English. Some even speak good English to me.
If you have taken out basic insurance in Germany, your reimbursement also includes dental treatment. Unfortunately, in order to cut costs, the public health insurance companies have significantly reduced dental coverage. Therefore, only very basic treatments are fully reimbursed by the public health insurance. For example, basic fillings, dental checks, scaling, hygiene work, removal of wisdom teeth are all included.
Orthodontic Problems To Watch For Adults
For many other necessary treatments you pay a part for your own account. For example, professional dental cleaning, crowns, bridges or root canal treatments. If you need advanced dental treatment, it can cost several hundred or even thousands of euros, as public health insurance only partially covers the cost.
With public health insurance, you go to your dentist and get treatment. You must therefore pay the amount that your basic insurance does not cover.
That is why many people who have basic insurance in Germany choose to take out supplementary dental insurance for better coverage.
Keep in mind that your public health insurance may cover a higher percentage of your costs if you visit the dentist regularly. For example, if you go to the dentist uninterruptedly for 10 years for preventive care, your basic insurance may reimburse 75% of your costs. This is to encourage you to take care of yourself regularly and thus reduce the cost of possible treatments.

Unlike public health insurance, private health insurance usually has a waiting period for new members. During this waiting period, insured persons do not receive full reimbursement for dental care. The length of the waiting period depends on the person's specific insurance policy and can take several months.
With private health insurance, you do not need to take out additional dental insurance. That's because dental coverage is usually already quite extensive. If you want even more dental coverage, ask your current private health insurance plan to upgrade to a better plan.
Because public health insurance does not provide comprehensive dental coverage, many people choose to purchase supplemental dental insurance to fill the gap. This is called "Zahnzusatzversicherung" in German. Please note: you can only take out additional dental insurance if you have basic insurance in Germany! If you have private health insurance, talk to your insurer about upgrading your plan if you want better dental coverage.
