"They may feel they've got a bargain with their car, but if the insurance costs are high – for example if it doesn't have modern safety features – it can be a false economy."

Peugeot 107 is at the top of the list of cars with the lowest insurance premium. A 12-month policy for 17-24-year-olds costs an average of £1,114 - although prices can be as high as £740 for a 17-year-old.

This small car is perfect for new drivers, and despite its small size, it has five doors, making it incredibly practical.

The Citroen C1 can get 69mpg and with just £110 a year in tax, the running costs for this smart little car are very reasonable.

Drivers can choose from the peppy 1.0-liter or 1.2-liter engines, and the light steering makes it easy to navigate city streets and park in tight spaces.

The first non-French car on the list costs just £1,182 a year to insure, but can be up to £736 cheaper from 17 years old.

The average cost of insurance for drivers with a Fiat 500 is £1,281 - but can be as high as £747.

The Ford Ka has been a popular choice among young drivers since it was first introduced in 1996 – and for 24 years, that's longer than most young drivers today.

Rounding out the top five is another design icon - the Fiat 500. This Italian car was Marmalade's best-selling car in 2019, combining style with practicality.

However, for younger drivers insuring a similarly priced Peugeot 108, the average annual premium was £802 lower, saving £1,934 a year.

Lee Griffin, founder and CEO of Go Compare, said: “Car insurance is still expensive for young drivers compared to those with long safe driving records. Statistics show that the type and cost of claims for newly qualified drivers is more expensive for insurers, resulting in higher premiums.
