"They may feel they've got a bargain with their car, but if the insurance costs are high – for example if it doesn't have modern safety features – it can be a false economy."

The Citroen C1 can get 69mpg and with just £110 a year in tax, the running costs for this smart little car are very reasonable.
Drivers can choose from the peppy 1.0-liter or 1.2-liter engines, and the light steering makes it easy to navigate city streets and park in tight spaces.

The first non-French car on the list costs just £1,182 a year to insure, but can be up to £736 cheaper from 17 years old.

However, for younger drivers insuring a similarly priced Peugeot 108, the average annual premium was £802 lower, saving £1,934 a year.
