What Is The Average Temperature In Denver

What Is The Average Temperature In Denver - Lake effect snow will continue Sunday downwind of Lakes Erie and Ontario. As a result, a lake front snow warning is in effect for areas of western and western New York, northwestern Pennsylvania, and northeastern Ohio. Meanwhile, an extended stagnant air warning is in place until early next week due to poor air quality in the North West. Read more >

Denver began 2019 under the influence of a weak El Niño condition that began in the fall of 2018 and continued into the summer of 2019. This weak El Nino episode gradually transitioned into a neutral ENSO (EL Nino - Southern Oscillation) environment during the summer of 2019 and will currently surround the northern hemisphere as we enter 2020. In general, El Nino conditions bring wetter than normal conditions to the Front Range and eastern Colorado, especially during the spring and winter months. In a La Niña environment, below-average precipitation typically occurs in the Front Range and high plains east of the Rockies. A neutral to neutral ENSO environment regularly brings periods of extreme drought and rain to the Queen Mountain region.

What Is The Average Temperature In Denver

In terms of precipitation and temperature indicators, 2019 ended wetter and cooler than average. After 3 years of below average precipitation, Denver ended 2019 with an above average total of 15.51 inches. That's 1.21" more than 14.30 inches (NCEI 1981-2010). The previous year, 2018, finished with 8.53 inches. In terms of temperature, 2019 is the first year since 2013 to be below the annual average. Denver's average the 2019 annual temperature of 49.6 °F was 0.9 °F below the 148-year average of 50.5 °F, which is 0.8 °F below the current NCEI 1981-2010 average of 50.4 °F.

Drought To Expand Amid Warmer Conditions April To June

2019 is off to a wet start as a cold, active pattern develops across the US Midwest. January, February and March saw above average precipitation and contributed a healthy portion to the snowfall totals for the second half of the 2018-19 season. After a slightly below average April, May saw the highest rainfall of the year at 3.23 inches. Meteorologically, May and July are Denver's wettest months of the year, so it's not unusual for May 2019 to be the monthly winner in the precipitation category. With the transition to the warm season in June and July, precipitation reached a two-month average with precipitation totals slightly above the respective monthly averages. The summer drought usually occurred only in August. This warm and dry period lasted from September to early October. The back half of the North American Monsoon also ended relatively quickly in the region in late summer 2019 as high pressure formed over the Great Basin, Desert Southwest, and Rockies. When dry high pressure dominates Colorado in September and October, as it did in 2019, it almost always results in gorgeous, calm, mild fall conditions. It all came to an abrupt end in the last week of October, when an arctic air mass brought freezing temperatures and snow to the Front Range, including Denver. This cold winter storm system brought much needed precipitation and saved October from being the third month with much below average precipitation. A cold and very wet winter storm hit the front ridge like clockwork a few days before Thanksgiving during the last week of November. A wet storm system brought more than 2 feet of snow to many areas along the northern front ridge. In percentage terms, November 2019 averaged 115%, largely due to the pre-Thanksgiving storm that dumped nearly an inch of snow on Denver. After two significant winter events in October and November, December was drier than average as changes in the Northern Hemisphere kept dry high pressure over the western United States through the end of the year.

Wet conditions in the Rocky Mountain Plains often coincide with below-average temperatures. This happened, of course, in the winter and spring months of 2019. The months of greatest interest were October, February, March and, at the end of the year, May. Both May and October are in the "Coolest October" category. A strong, cold storm system arrived in May, bringing heavy rainfall and snow to the foothills and south ridge, making the month the seventh coldest in Denver's 148-year history with a monthly average of 51.6°F. A year later, a strong and sudden change in the pattern typical of the western mountains brought the average temperatures for the two months of September and October to the opposite end of the temperature spectrum. After September's warmest February on Denver's record, an arctic blast hit the last week of October, making it the 4th coldest year in Denver's 148-year history. September ends with an average temperature of 69.3°F, while October ends at a cool 43.7°F.

A cold and active start to 2019 brought mostly evenly spaced storm systems to northern Colorado in January and February. Three powerful storm systems brought snow to Denver in just the short month of February, allowing for 135% more snow than the average for the month. March will not disappoint snow and winter lovers as March is known as the snowiest month in the Mile High City in terms of climate. While this month was 21% above average, the most notable was a very strong and historic storm system that brought widespread snowfall to Northeast Colorado. The storm didn't dump much snow on the Front Ridge, but winds associated with a deep closure produced record winds of 60 to 80 mph east of the Mile High that whipped northern and eastern Colorado in a white blanket. - output conditions. Two cold active months in February, March and May combined with additional snow in April continued the cold and wet theme of the first snow season of 2019-20. Arctic winter and good snow arrived in the last week of October. This cold event, combined with a wet snowstorm before Thanksgiving in November, brought additional water to the South Platte Basin. The last month of 2019 saw no snow in December, or a near record, but a storm system late in the month brought the last snow of 2019, leaving Denver to end the month with 2.8 inches.

By the end of 2019, Denver's annual average temperature finally reached 49.6 °F, 0.8 °F below the 1981–2010 NCEI annual average of 50.4 °F. For the entire 148-year record, 2019 was 0.9°F below the 50.5°F average. It was tied for 38th coldest in Denver's 148-year temperature record, along with 1965, 1964, 1962, and 1886. The coldest year in Denver's history was 1912, with an average annual temperature of 47.6 °F. The warmest year was 1934 with an average annual temperature of 54.8°F.
