Truckers Are Getting Big Pay Hikes, But There's Still A Shortage Of Drivers
I carefully followed the history of many carriers, just in case I ever needed a new driving job.
You may be interested to note that some of the carriers I recommended 20 years ago do not make my current list of recommendations.
But, for some reason, they don't list 'bad paying drivers'. (This is usually because the drives are integrated.)
Some of these carriers have large fleets of trucks, but they are managed so well that they maintain a 'family atmosphere', which I really like.

HO Wolding, Inc. - Volding is a privately owned dry cargo carrier based in Amherst, Wisconsin. A unique quality of Wolding is their very low driver turnover rate, which speaks volumes about their driving operations.
A well-managed carrier is known to treat its drivers well. I have personally spoken with many of their drivers over the years, and every driver has spoken highly of their experience with this company.
Nussbaum Transportation - Nussbaum is located in Hudson, Illinois. They are a medium-sized carrier, a dry cargo transportation company, responsibly managed and known for the choice of their drivers. ** (
Pride Transport Inc - This is a relatively small reefer outfit based out of Salt Lake City, Utah. They run high end equipment. Pride is personal property. They are well known for treating their drivers 'like family'.

Walmart - Walmart is a quality trucking company with good job security and very low driver turnover, both of which are in high demand among drivers. The reason for the strong job security is that Wal-Mart is not a common carrier, but a private carrier.
They operate their own fleet of trucks and haul their own cargo, not a common situation for trucking companies, but one that provides good business protection.
I especially like Wal-Mart because it's a private fleet, with excellent job security. Although they have thousands of trucks, they don't even fit into the typical mega-carrier classification.
TMC Transportation - TMC is a flatbed trucking outfit, based in Des Moines, Iowa. They own and operate excellent equipment, which is sure to attract drivers.

Sammons Trucking - Sammons has been around for a while. They specialize in flatbed trucks and are located in Missoula, Montana. They employ both company drivers as well as proprietary operators.
Jim Palmer Trucking - Jay Palmer is a private, family-run trucking company based out of Missoula, Montana. They are temperature controlled freighters, running the US West Coast to the Midwest, running the appropriate equipment. They offer a paid CDL training program.
Western Distribution Transportation Corporation - This mid-sized privately owned company operates some of the finest company equipment seen on the road. However, they are not known to be a major payment carrier. They are a specialty car shipping service out of Denver, Colorado.
TMC - A good starting company for a new driver. The pay is good and they have Peterbilts, if that appeals to you.

Schneider - Financially strong company (which is very important), no team driver training, 3 weeks of structured training, less time with a mentor on the road than most.
Shaffer Trucking - They have 6-8 weeks of on-the-road training with a mentor. 1 week is 8 hours of team driving position.
FedEx Ground - Not as well known, but definitely worth checking out. FedEx Ground Contractors will accept and train new CDL drivers. Most of the work is team, but there are several solo runs as well as day runs. We found that the salary range for these drivers is $85,000 to $98,000 per year. It is based out of Columbus, Ohio.
They operate current model equipment, always well maintained. They are good for being one of the best trucking companies with paid training.
Local Transportation Company Looks For New Ways To Recruit Truck Drivers
Maverick is truly a mega carrier. However, I personally consider them a cut above the rest, as they are well-regulated carriers.
TMC – If a flatbed truck floats your boat, this carrier offers a great training program with a decent salary paid for a 3 week training period.
We prefer that their initial training period is 3 weeks and upon completion of this portion, the student is then paired with a certified trainer for an additional period of 5 weeks.
YRC Freight - YRC is no stranger to trucking. They are union carriers and have been around for a long time.
Walmart Offering As Much As $110,000 To Drive Its Trucks
They have training available in several locations: Kansas City, Maybrook, New York, Nashville, Tennessee, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Salt Lake City, Utah, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, Hammond, Indiana. Continuous programs are posted, so there is good access to the programs.
A special benefit is that if a student successfully completes training and begins working with YRC, the first year as a truck driver can pay between $60,000-$65,000.
Upon successful completion of 4 weeks of CDL training, you will have your CDL with doubles/triples and tanker endorsement. Then, you will be hired by the company as a full-time employee.
This carrier pays If the truck is not running due to equipment failure or delayed time, the employee will receive an hourly rate. And we like it.
Trucking Bloodbath: Truckers Are Preparing For Downturn
XPO Logistics – XPO has no upfront costs for a trainee, and provides 3 meals/day to trainees during the training period. It is noted that the classes are small even though the carrier itself is a large carrier.
Rapid Express - This is a Texas company that offers training + work. I have spoken to many drivers who love what this carrier does.
Roehl + Schneider - Both of these companies send their trainees to an outside CDL school - Wisconsin Technical College.
ABF Freight - ABF is an LTL carrier based primarily out of Fort Smith, Arkansas, with several yards. Another union carrier that is definitely an above-average payer.
Best Trucking Companies That Hire Inexperienced Drivers
Barr-Nunn - Based out of Granger, Iowa, a strong, sustainable carrier that works hard to reduce its carbon footprint in this world. They employ single and team company drivers as well as proprietary operators.
They have been recognized as a Certified Premier Carrier by the National Transportation Institute for the past 14 years.
Dupree Logistics - Dupree is a small tanker trucking outfit based in Lafayette, Louisiana. They are all over the US. In the process of opening some new branches, they handle late model appliances well. Most of their trucking jobs are in 'hourly wage' positions. Their management team is top notch.
GP Transco - A mid-sized company based in Illinois, GP Transco is the third highest paying carrier in the US. 2 cents/mile extra for drivers with driver facing dash cam (not mandatory program).
The Best Truck Driving Jobs For New Drivers
UPS - UPS, a popular carrier, has many yards nationwide and is a union trucking company. Because they are unionized, drivers' wages are higher than average. They have less driver turnover.
Old Dominion Freight Line - They've been around for 85 years and still going strong. Although they are based out of Virginia, they have several yards throughout the US, their pay rate for their drivers is higher than the average driver salary.
Hirshbach Motor Lines - Based out of Dubuque, Iowa, with yards in Sioux City, IA, Denton, TX Springfield, MA, Atlanta, GA and Crete, NE, this company has been around for over 80+ years.
They are privately owned, and known for their low driver turnover rate. Definitely an over the road fleet, hauling mostly temperature controlled products as well as some dry goods.
How Much Do Truck Drivers Make?
Crete Carriers - Crete is headquartered in Central America in Lincoln, Nebraska, which can make this major carrier convenient if you live in the central US region.
They have a reputation as a well-managed outfit and are known to treat their employees fairly. Their distribution gets rave reviews for efficiency and privacy (which can be rare).
I have currently interviewed drivers in Crete who say they are getting fleet-wide 'promotions' because of their performance during the current pandemic.
They have been around for 52 years and are still a private organization which we consider a good advantage.
They Say There's A Shortage, But They Sure Don't Hire Like There's One
Certified Freight Logistics - Small company operating out of Santa Mira, CA, Costco Wholesale operates specialty freight to Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, Northern CA and Southern CA. They pay for all time driving and on duty, as well as mileage. They also have a good medical package.
Indian River Transportation, Inc - This medium sized food grade tanker outfit is from Winter Haven, Florida. They run great equipment, although they are not high paying carriers.
Dynamic Transit, Inc. - This Granite, Illinois carrier has an 'old school' feel. them
