The demand for taxis in Las Vegas has decreased since the closure of the tourist corridor due to the coronavirus.
The number of taxi drivers in the Las Vegas Valley dropped 97 percent from February to April, according to taxi authority data.
In February, Southern Nevada recorded 1.1 million trips provided by the area's 16 taxi companies. That was down from 28,736 in April when all Las Vegas Boulevard resorts and non-essential businesses throughout the Valley were closed for the month.

The impact of the coronavirus can also be seen in March, with the number of travelers down 55 percent compared to February, down to 499,926 trips, since the initial stay-at-home advice was issued on 17- that of March.
Ten of the 16 types of taxis are providing service, while the remaining six have voluntarily and temporarily suspended operations, according to the Taxi Authority. Seven of the 10 brands operate under the YCS & Newcab umbrella, while Desert Cab, Western Cab and Lucky Cab are the other three that operate.
"Despite a significant decrease in monthly trips, taxi drivers continue to provide hundreds of essential rides to passengers who go to grocery stores, pharmacies and medical appointments across the valley every day," said the CEO. Taxi Scott Whittemore. "Taxi service remains accessible to senior commuters and regular customers through onboarding apps and easy-to-use ordering platforms."
By comparison, the only trackable statistics for ride-hailing companies like Uber and Lyft come from McCarran International Airport, as the Transportation Authority does not require those companies to submit monthly reports.

McCarran's statistics show that layoffs at the airport fell 97 percent in April compared to a year ago, from 361,001 layoffs in April 2019 to 10,363 last month.
YCS & New Measurement Director Jonathan Schwartz said the industry has never seen anything like what the coronavirus pandemic has caused. Schwartz said he has been forced to lay off most of the company's 1,800 drivers, with fewer than 50 on Valley roads each day.
"No one thinks their business income will be close to zero," Schwartz said. "Unfortunately, we've had to lay off most of our drivers until there's some kind of business recovery. "There's almost no traffic on the Strip and almost no traffic inside. and outside McCarran."
The Taxi Authority has issued protocols and directives for taxis to follow, including requiring disinfection of high-touch surfaces after each ride, thorough cleaning after changing and wearing a face mask when picking up passengers.

"As our city reopens as the world's top tourist destination, we are committed to making the Las Vegas taxi industry one of the safest transportation options," said Whittemore.
While there are no concrete indications of when casinos will be able to come back online and what restrictions there will be early on, Schwartz said he is closely monitoring what the resort is doing to make sure its brands are ready. They have to go to the right place. levels over time.
"It will be based on demand," Schwartz said. "We will gradually bring people back as demand dictates." There's no way to know until we start seeing the numbers. Much of that will be assessed as part of the casino slots. We are looking very closely at that. We're trying to use all the information we can get for the needs of the staff."
