To some extent, all these different flowers show something remarkable: the explosion of software companies and their interest in almost every job, business, and technology in the world. Love them or hate them, these lands reflect our reality.
I estimate that there are more than 100,000 software companies (ISVs) worldwide today - up from 10,000 just 10 years ago. I would not be surprised, with the level of hyperspecialization new customers want, to see that number increase to 1 million in 2027.
That may seem strange at first. But when you think about it, it actually makes a lot of sense. In today's increasingly digital world - and I believe that digital life as we know it is in its infancy - many companies will be software companies. Everything digital is driven by software.
And although there will be giants, such as the Five Terrible now - Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, and Microsoft - I do not believe that the world will meet up to half of the mega-corps and nothing else.

The two ends of the spectrum are incompatible. You can have very few giants and small startups and specialists. In fact, as Joseph Flaherty recently discussed in an article on TechCrunch pushing back the end of the startup era:
"If we mean the successful launch as the creation of important companies that will go down in history and are worth hundreds of millions of dollars, in fact, we can enter a rare period. If we mean success in terms of creating a wide range of products, which send to tens of millions of customers and earn hundreds of millions, or thousands of dollars in a short time, times the fun will come first."
In many ways, large "creator businesses" with stable platforms can provide the perfect environment for an entrepreneurial ecosystem to thrive. (That's one of the reasons I'm so excited about the role I took on at HubSpot this fall.)

Of course, there will be meetings. Big fish will eat small fish - this is necessary for them to get the fruits of small agility and new things. But, as in nature, the number of small fish is still stimulating.

This is exactly what happened with the tech industry from 2010 to 2017. 61% of the martech companies I saw in 2010 were acquired in the last 7 years - many of them are important in the day of the "business cloud."
But that didn't stop an explosion of 5,000 tech businesses from happening at the same time. Collecting together can be a good way to do business.
So hats off to Jay and Joseph for looking beyond the big shopping topic to make sure all the little features of all this crazy stuff have an important role to play. . Tired of crying "Consolidation!"
