Q: I was in high school and recently became interested in plants. I was hoping you could point me in the direction of a low maintenance tool that would work for a beginner. I want to avoid choosing laborious or expensive plants, only to watch them die of neglect due to my schedule of varsity tennis, sailing, and college applications. It is an indoor plant, most likely on the table next to me within two feet of the window (not in direct sunlight).

I do this first because it is very indestructible. I have put mine in several bad conditions and it can handle almost anything except the cold. This unusual and sweet plant is cultivated as a culinary vegetable in the tropics, which makes sense because it can grow in places where it doesn't. If you don't like the garish, but the color, I also recommend their cousins, kohleria and sinningia. The flowers are slightly more showy than African violets.
