Kristen Traneit is so excited about Daiso's upcoming launch that she couldn't sleep Tuesday night. And on Wednesday morning, Las Vegas residents went to a Japanese discount store at 6 a.m. to be first in line for its 10 a.m. grand opening.
"We've wanted a Daiso here in Las Vegas for years, and that's why we're here," said Tranate, wearing a Hello Kitty face mask. “We want to say that we were the first to get involved. We made a deal, we're going to step on our feet. While."
Tranate and her friend accomplished that goal as the store's first customers when it opened, leading the line that wound around the Arroyo Market Square and onto the Badura Avenue sidewalk behind the southwest valley plaza.
A Local's Guide To The Best Of Las Vegas, Nevada
Shuhei Geshi, assistant manager of Daiso California, said the 6,000-square-foot store is Daiso's first Nevada location and 81st in the United States. Described by some as "The Japanese Dollar Store," the retailer plans to open two more Las Vegas locations in 2022 -- one in downtown Summerlin and one in Henderson.
Most items cost $1.50, although some may sell for more. Customers browse aisles filled with housewares, kitchenware, electronics, Asian snacks, "kawaii" beauty supplies or cute gifts like lots of dinosaurs and consumer products like hamburger buns. Japanese packaging products are priced in yen, and posters throughout the store show the conversion chart to US dollars.
Buyers are excited to be the first customers in Nevada. Many people who had visited other locations, including California, Seattle or New York, brought friends and family to the grand opening to introduce them to the store.
"I know about Daiso because it's so popular on social media and it's so prevalent in California," said Kayla Smith, a Las Vegas resident. "I've been wanting to open a store for a long time."

To celebrate and promote the launch, the first 100 customers to purchase at least $30 will receive a goodie bag on Thursday. Additionally, the first 100 customers to purchase at least $50 will receive a 15-inch plush toy. The store also advertises giving away various gifts throughout the day.
Daiso has nearly 6,000 stores in Japan and around the world, according to its website. Geshi said it is counting on that popularity to continue its U.S. expansion. The company, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2022, hopes to open more stores in the United States next year.
"I'm sure our customers really like our product," Geshi said. “Not just today, come every week or every day. "We always have new products."
