It took a while to arrive, but the plug-in hybrid version of Volvo's small SUV is worth the wait. Powered by a 1.5-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine paired with a 10.7 kWh battery and an electric motor, the XC40 Recharge T5 sends 262 horsepower to the front wheels (the limited T4 is available). The result is a fast SUV that, while not particularly stimulating to drive, is quiet around town and relaxing on the road. The petrol engine can get a little tired and the suspension is on the stiff side, but the XC40 is still the best small SUV ever - even with 28km of electric range and 141mpg economy.
