Which State Has The Least Population - This is a list of the 50 states, 5 territories and the District of Columbia by population density, population rank and land area. It also includes a sortable table of the size of States, Territories, Divisions, and Territories by population grade and land area, and a sortable table of States, Divisions, Regions, and Territories in square miles and square miles.
Population is defined as population per area (divided by) land. The resident population is from 2020 US states.
Which State Has The Least Population
The population of the United States is lower than that of many other countries because of the large area of the United States. There are large and sparsely populated areas in parts of the United States, such as the section from east to west that stretches from the outskirts of Seattle to Minneapolis, or the section from north to south from Tacoma to San Francisco (except for Parsia). from the cities of Portland and Spokane). For comparison, the population size of the United States is 1/15 that of South Korea and 1/12 that of India and the Netherlands. On the other hand, it is more than 8 times higher than that of Canada and more than 9 times higher than that of Australia.

New York is home to the nation's most populous city, and ranks seventh among the states by size. In 2021, Washington, D.C. had the highest population density in the US, with 10,984.43 people per square kilometer. Overall, the United States had about 94 inhabitants per square kilometer, and Alaska was the state with the lowest population density, with 1.28 inhabitants per square kilometer.
The problem of population density In simple words, population density is the population of a country divided by the area of the country. While this can be an interesting measure of how many people live in a country and how big the country is, it does not take into account the degree of urbanization, or the proportion of people living in urban centers.
For example, Russia is the largest country in the world and its population is relatively low, so its population density is very low. However, much of the country is uninhabited, so cities in Russia are more densely populated than the rest of the country.
Urbanization in the United States While the United States is not very densely populated compared to other countries, its population density has increased significantly over the past few decades. The degree of urbanization has also increased, with well over half the population living in urban centers.

It is, for example, that divides the American economic activity in two. Or the one that does the same to the population.
U.s. Population Growth Lowest On Record
There was a fun new entry in the genre on Reddit last week, with a map showing the vast area of land inhabited by only 1 percent of the population. The map is a bit hard to read and uses data from 2010, so I made a version using the latest 2014 numbers from the US Census.
The districts in blue are the 462 least dense districts in the country. None of them have a population density exceeding 7.4 people per square kilometer. In 65 of these districts, the density is less than one person per square kilometer.
The least populated place in the United States is the Yukon-Koyukuk census tract in Alaska. At more than 145,000 square miles, it is larger than New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia—combined. But it's home to just 5,547 people, for a population density of less than 4 people every 100 miles.
Another way to understand these extremes is to compare our 462 most sparsely populated counties with some of the most populous places in the United States. In the map below, I've highlighted the Bronx and Queens boroughs of New York in orange. Together they are home to 3.8 million people - far more than the population of the blue counties.
Half Of The Us Population Lives In Just 9 States
None of this is complicated or groundbreaking. We all know how population density works - the country is made up of cities and rural areas, and the former have far more people than the latter.
But while it's easy enough to grasp the concept in theory, it's even easier to lose sight of just how vast and desolate many of the country's countryside really are. This is especially true for those of us who live on the coasts, or in the eastern half of the country.
Geographically, we are a nation of mountains, forests and countryside surrounding tiny islands of urbanity. These maps help put some of that into perspective. The United States has a population that is almost five times larger than the United Kingdom. However, the UK still has more people than the 27 least populous countries combined. On the other hand, the UK has fewer people than the two most populous countries.
The map above shows what each of these combinations will look like. In red, you can see that the UK has more people than the following countries combined:

However, if you look at the states in blue, you can see that only California and Texas have slightly more people than the UK.
Overall, the UK is the 51st most populous country on Earth with a population of 64.1 million people living in 242,910 km2 (93,788 sq mi), giving it a population density of 262 people/km2 (679 people) . / square mile).
In contrast, the United States is the 180th most populous country on Earth with a population of 319.3 million people living in 9,826,675 square kilometers (3,794,101 sq mi), giving it a population density of 32.5 people/km (84.2 people/square mile).
Going back to the two groups of states above, the red states have 61 million people living in 5.6 million square kilometers for a population density of only 10.9 people/square kilometer or only about 1/3 of the already low US average.
Of American's Can Determine 52 Senators?
In contrast, the two blue states have 65 million people living in 1.1 million square kilometers at a density of 59 people/km2 or about 80% above the American average but only about 1/4 the density of Great Britain.
However, there are actually 4 countries with a higher population density than the UK. they:
Finally, Washington, being a city, has the highest density of all at 4,088.4 people/km2 for a total population of 658,893. But it's still not as dense as London, which has a density of 5,354 people/km2 and a total population of 8.4 million.
For further perspective, here's how the population of Great Britain can enter the United States 5 times:
Smallest States In Nigeria And Their Population
So are the UK and/or the US really overpopulated or could they be even more so in the future? Leave your comments below: Population density has been monitored for over 200 years in the US. During this period, the number of people living in the US per square mile increased from 4.5 in 1790 to 87.4 in 2010.
The current population of the United States is 332 million (2020), and the country ranks 146th in terms of population density (87 people/sq m or 34 people/sq km).
About 65 percent of the US population, or almost 2 out of 3 Americans, live in the red line, known as the "100 mile zone".
The population density of the United States varies from state to state. The northeastern region of the United States is the most densely populated part of the nation.

The densest state in the USA is New Jersey (1,263 per square meter). Rhode Island is the second most densely populated state in the USA (1,006 per square meter). The least populated state is Alaska (1.26 per square meter).
