Instead of taking food orders, Lal studied interactions of a more sensitive nature: with patients, doctors and researchers at the Margaretha Hospital, where he is part of a team developing a program to help men with prostate cancer.
"It's a really valuable experience," said Lal, 17, who last week launched an eight-week pilot summer student clinical scientist program.
An initiative started by the University Health Network, which includes Princess Margaret and the Toronto District School Board, has allowed nine Toronto teenagers to help a research team at a hospital while being paid.
"High school is the time when you choose what you want to do, and it gives you more exposure to different (career) opportunities," Lal says.

The program was "everything I hoped it would be," adds Lal, who learned how to gently approach patients in pain and connect with others who had similar experiences by following their supervisors.
“I didn't plan to drop into a clinic and talk to patients. I expected them to take me aside. But they had a lot of faith in me. "
Unlike summer opportunities for high school juniors, the clinical scientist program is a paid job rather than a volunteer position, a first for the hospital. Students receive a minimum wage, supported by the Princess Margaret Foundation.
"They're learning and working at the same time," says Leanne Boutiller, director of the UHN-TDSB partnership, which has placed 2,000 students in co-op placements in academic and summer programs over the past 23 years.

The first year has been so successful that Boutilier says he has high hopes for the program to continue and expand.
According to Bouteiler, working without pay is not an option for many Toronto students. This provides an opportunity for valuable on-site experiences for those unable to spend the summer volunteering.
"We didn't want work to get in the way," adds radiation oncologist Dr. Meredith Giuliani, director of cancer education, who oversees many of the hospital's education programs.
Students came this summer from Bloor College and Newtonbrook High School. School officials encouraged the teenagers to pursue careers in health care and believed they would thrive in the pilot program.

Under Princess Margaret's supervision, they have been involved in research on topics as diverse as MRI-guided radiation therapy for liver cancer, peritoneal biology and the role of family doctors in palliative care.
The goal, Giuliani said, was to introduce them to the many careers available in hospitals, which include medical physicists, health chefs, librarians, bioethicists and healthcare professionals.
The fresh perspective and energy that young people bring is good for the hospital and "an investment in the future of our specialty," he adds.
In addition to working with a research mentor on a supervised project, they attended weekly seminars and interacted with many medical and graduate students at various stages of their careers.

They also participated in a student summer research day, presenting their research posters to a panel of judges.
"The program was amazing because it was designed for high school students," says Kelly Jesalva, who jumped at the chance and was one of the winners of the research poster competition.
A 17-year-old Newtonbrook student spent the summer in the world of molecular biology, helping researchers investigate the link between nasopharyngeal cancer and the Epstein-Barr virus. He donned a lab coat, peered through microscopes and was able to collect data through a sophisticated lab app that amplified DNA.

"It takes a lot of patience and compassion," Jesalwa says, citing the dedication, long hours and sacrifice she sees in the staff. "Participating in research touches a part of my heart."

"Patients go through their own journeys, doctors are not part of them," says Parkash, who uses Facebook posts and comments, Twitter feeds and YouTube accounts to gather information about what patients share and believe. .
