The BMW i7 is the all-electric version of the German brand's new flagship, the 7 Series. Instead of making it as aerodynamic as possible to beat the 450+ mile range of its closest rival, the Mercedes EQS, BMW skimped on comfort and luxury. Rear legroom and headroom are plentiful for a 4.5-metre sedan, and the optional 31-inch 8K theater screen is something even the Hyperscreen EQS infotainment can't match.
Only one model has been available since launch: the i7 xDrive60 with 537 hp and 745 Nm of torque, plus dual motors for all wheels. It also features 101.7 kWh for a range of up to 388 miles and 195 kW of fast charging capability. The BMW i7 drives beautifully in the city and on the highway, gliding almost silently, apart from the sounds created by the film's composer Hans Zimmer, which change depending on the driving mode. The BMW iX is the German brand's top-of-the-line electric SUV and is a direct rival to the likes of the Audi e-tron, Tesla Model X, Mercedes EQE SUV and Polestar 3. Like many of BMW's latest models, its styling is undeniably distinctive. Fortunately, it also excels in the way it drives, the ability to charge quickly, the technology on board, the quality of the interior and the cabin space it offers.
There are three versions of the iX, including the 611bhp M60 with a 0-62mph time of four seconds. But most people will probably prefer the less powerful but impressive xDrive40 or xDrive50 variants. The latter also has a dual-motor setup, but thanks to its massive 105.2 kWh battery, it can still travel 380 kilometers on a single charge. While SUVs are big business for Audi, the German brand is also known for its sedans, and the e-tron GT is the world's first zero-emission four-door car. The lower coupe focuses on performance and driver enjoyment and also includes typical Audi technology and build quality. It also has a range of nearly 300 kilometers per charge and takes 21 minutes to charge from 10-80% thanks to a charging speed of up to 270 kW.
It has a lot in common with the Porsche Taycan, but the Audi is quieter than the Porsche. Overall, the e-tron GT is great to drive, has a fantastic interior, lots of technology and is really comfortable, definitely making it one of the most interesting electric cars on the market today. Porsche has only released one electric car so far, but the Porsche Taycan is one of the best electric cars on sale. In addition to three different body styles: sedan, Sport Turismo family and the more robust Cross Turismo family, there are several versions to choose from. It now includes the more suitable 4S for everyday driving, the driver's GTS and the incredibly fast Turbo and Turbo S. The latter has 751 horsepower, and acceleration from 0 to 62 km/h takes an incredible 2.8 seconds.
As you would expect from a Porsche, the handling of the Taycan is excellent. As for the route, it reaches between 208 and 313 kilometers, depending on the model. Like its Audi e-tron GT sister car, the Taycan is capable of 270kW fast charging, although you may struggle to find a public charging point fast enough to take advantage of it. The Mercedes EQS SUV uses the same platform and powertrain as the luxury sedan (shown below), but is taller and wider than its luxury sedan sibling and offers seven seats. It's significantly heavier and less aerodynamic than the four-door sedan, so efficiency and durability obviously take a hit, although it still has an official range of 366 kilometers. All UK-sold models also come with all-wheel drive, thanks to a twin-motor setup and 200kW fast charging.
The quality of the interior is excellent, especially the leather used on the seats, dashboard and doors. These seats - seven of them - are plush and very supportive, with headrests and adjustable lumbar support. Infotainment is also among the best in the business, even without the optional Hyperscreen setup, and on the road the EQS SUV is very comfortable and boasts an exceptional level of refinement. Genesis, Hyundai's luxury sub-brand, was launched in the UK in 2021, bringing with it a selection of premium electric cars to take on offerings from Mercedes, BMW and Tesla. Electric cars based on internal combustion engine platforms are often compromised compared to their "clean" counterparts, but the Electrified G80 seems to be one of the few exceptions. It can charge up to 240kW and offers a range of 323km, plus the quality and technology you'd expect from an executive sedan (German or otherwise).
It's relatively quiet up to 60 mph, with the only sounds entering the cabin like the faint screeching of windshield wipers or the rustle of cats running over their eyes. Wind noise is only noticeable at highway speeds, and the G80 Electrified's superior regenerative braking makes for easy one-pedal riding in most situations. In terms of quality, refinement and technology, the G80 Electrified ticks all the boxes for a modern luxury electric car for less than £10,000 more than its Mercedes EQE rival.
