Getting Section 8 help can be challenging. But even when renters like Aiello secure vouchers, they face another hurdle: finding a place to live.
Voucher holders have 60 days to find housing if they don't get an extension before the aid ends.
"If you've talked to people who have gotten a voucher, really struggled with it, and at worst failed, I think that's a tragedy," said housing attorney Jim Schaafsma of the Michigan Poverty Law Program.

First issued Aug. 8, the vouchers gave Aiello two months to find housing, but voucher holders can request an extension if they face a tight rental market or turbulent circumstances.
After two extensions, the December 5 deadline looms. Now Aiello, who worked as a cashier at McDonald's before she was injured on the job last year, hopes her current landlord will also accept Section 8 vouchers before they expire.
