For $250 a day, Houston attorney Scott Jacobson drives around town in a gray 2013 Mercedes S550 while his own car is in the shop.
Jacobson, 32, was surprised to find the luxury brand's vehicle available at an Enterprise Rent-A-Car in Houston after he crashed his BMW M5 earlier this month. This was my first time renting from Enterprise's "exotic car collection".

He said the luxury brand vehicles available at Enterprise on Old Katy Road in west Houston, ranging from sedans and coupes to sport utility vehicles, are convenient for luxury car owners, out-of-towners who want to drive in style and for those . who want to test drive vehicles someone might be interested in buying.
He also said a luxury car rental would make a great gift, something the Missouri-based company hopes to pick up this holiday season. On its Houston website, it promotes luxury rentals as free.
Enterprise, the nation's largest rental company, traditionally offers less flashy vehicles. But it has responded to the growing demand for luxury rentals across the country.
The fleet includes 40 makes and models, he said. As demand for luxury cars increased, the company recently expanded to 13 locations in six states. Houston, the most recent location, was added in September 2012.

The Old Katy Road location in Houston, the only company in the city to offer these cars, has seen strong demand for them, company officials said.
The most popular vehicles locally are the Mercedes-Benz S550, Audi A8 and BMW 750. Porsche coupes, Cadillac Escalades and Range Rovers are also available.
"We see them as a gift for people who want to enjoy a night out in style," Phillips said. "Vacation would lend itself to that."
For all rentals, Enterprise offers to pick up its customers and bring them to the nearest car rental location. With the luxury rental, however, the vehicle is delivered to the customer's door.

Phillips said the initiative began due to a demand from customers who wanted to rent luxury cars for special occasions or vacations. Houston was chosen as the Texas location because of its strong rental market, he said.
"It's a big market with a lot of travelers," he said. "It certainly made business sense."
The U.S. car rental industry bounced back last year after a slump that began in 2008, according to data from Car Rental News.
Sharon Faulkner, executive director of the American Car Rental Association, an industry group based in New York, said demand for exotic cars has accelerated in the past six months.

Traditionally, these rentals were popular in tourist destinations like Florida and California. She attributes this increase in demand in part to an improving economy, with consumers willing to spend more.
Kit Yarrow, professor of business and psychology at Golden Gate University in San Francisco, said it sounds like a good idea to give a car lover the experience of owning an expensive car.
"There's been a recent shift in consumers toward more temporary or shared ownership" of everything from bikes to cars to apartments and dogs, Yarrow said.
