Q: I want to reseed bare areas of my lawn and don't want to wait too long to see results. What grass seeds grow the fastest?
A: Waiting for grass seeds to germinate and mature can feel like watching grass grow! After all, the average grass seed can take eight or more weeks to germinate (that is, sprout from the soil) and turn into a established lawn ready for foot traffic. Fortunately, fast-growing grass seeds can go from seed to seedling in as little as five weeks, an advantage when planting in poor soil or reseeding in areas left by erosion or pets. Read below on what seeds to sow for fast and steady grass growth.
Not all fast-growing grasses can tolerate the temperature where you live, so choose the right seeds for your climate: winter or summer. Cool-season grasses thrive in areas with hot summers and many cool winter days—think Northern California, the Pacific Northwest, the upper Great Plains, the Midwest, and New England. Warm-season grasses grow best in areas with hot summers and cold winters, such as the South and Southeast. Do you live in a "transition zone" between north and south (eg, from Southern California east to Virginia)? Both cool-season and warm-season grasses will grow well, so take or plant warm-season grass first, then manage (replant) with cool-season grass.
