Orlando was Disney World for many families, but then Harry Potter revived the Universal Orlando theme parks, and now there are a variety of theme parks and attractions available, so you can take a week-long family vacation to Orlando without setting foot on a Disney property. One of those new theme park options in the greater Orlando area is Legoland Florida.
Legoland focuses on - you guessed it - all things Lego. If you're wondering whether to include Legoland as part of your next Central Florida vacation, we've got all the information you need to plan a physical rock star excursion.
Lego® City Airport
Legoland Florida is located in Winter Haven, Florida, southwest of Orlando. When you consider the traffic that often plagues the Orlando area, you may want to plan for a full hour to drive from Disney World to Legoland. Orlando International Airport (MCO) is a little further, about 75 minutes. The trip from Tampa International Airport (TPA) is about the same distance, while a trip from Orlando Sanford Airport (SFB) is closer to two hours.
There are no significant public transportation options from Orlando to Legoland. However, the park operates a shuttle from one of Universal Orlando's parking lots to Legoland. The cost is minimal ($5), but the shuttle only runs once a day in each direction. You can make a reservation and read more about shuttle times on the Legoland website.
Comparatively speaking, Legoland is a small theme park. It can easily be a day attraction and two days is the maximum amount needed to accomplish almost everything.
Legoland was exclusively a day park, even with a few attractions added in recent years such as Ninjago. This was especially true if you were staying at the Legoland Hotel. Your kids could do most of what Legoland had to offer in one day and spend another half day enjoying the activities included with their hotel stay.

But with the addition of the water park, two full days at Legoland are well worth it. The water park is enough to occupy almost a whole day. With a wave pool, lazy river, slides and interactive areas, there's enough to keep most kids occupied from late morning until dinner time.
Along with the rides, Legoland itself has some shows and Miniland. Miniland is a giant Lego village featuring huge Lego creations of space shuttles, Las Vegas, New York City and lots of Star Wars. Lego fans young and old will definitely want to spend some time here.
Character encounters take place throughout Legoland. Key characters such as Master Wu, Kai and Nya can be found in the land of Ninjago. There is a dedicated encounter in the new Lego Movie World. You'll also find some pop-up character meet-and-greet opportunities near some of the retail stores at the park's main entrance.
As for the ground clearance requirements for most thrill rides, they're really anywhere from 36 or 40 inches, up to 48 inches, with many rides offering a height (or age) requirement to ride yourself and another if riding with an adult.

Legoland is for everyone who loves Lego. Point. Each park ride has a Lego theme. Pool toys are shaped like Legos, as are children's lunch boxes, drinking glasses and just about anything else you can imagine. There aren't many cool rides for older visitors. Legoland has become a bit "hipper" for some kids since the release of the Lego movies, so this helps a bit if you have both younger and older kids.
Legoland Florida does not see the same crowd pull as other major theme parks in the Orlando area. Even on the busiest holidays, you're unlikely to find the kind of crazy anticipation you might see at Disney World. (During the slower months, Legoland Florida isn't even open every day of the week, so you'll want to check the calendar if you're traveling during peak times.)
Whether it's spring break, Thanksgiving, Christmas, or summer holiday weekends, an early start at Legoland is probably your best chance to get on the most popular rides with ease. Some rides have higher occupancy (a typical Ninjago car can hold a dozen riders), which helps prevent lines from getting out of hand. Miniland and shows have virtually unlimited capacity, along with a handful of large play areas throughout the park. Many people will also want to stop and buy Lego sets that can only be found at Legoland.
All in all, Legoland is a "cool" theme park, relatively speaking. No serious advance strategy or 180-day reservations required.
