Traveler's Guide To Las Vegas Taxis On The Strip
The demand for taxis in Las Vegas has plummeted after the resort corridor closed due to the coronavirus.
According to the Taxicab Authority, taxi rides in the Las Vegas Valley dropped 97 percent from February to April.
In February, Southern Nevada saw 1.1 million trips provided by 16 taxi companies in the region. In April, that dropped to 28,736, when all the major resorts on Las Vegas Boulevard and non-essential businesses in the Valley closed for the month.
The impact of the coronavirus could also be seen in March, with ridership down 55 percent compared to February to 499,926 trips since the first stay-at-home recommendations were issued on March 17.

10 out of 16 taxi brands provide services, and the other six stopped their work voluntarily and temporarily, according to the taxi administration. Seven of the 10 brands operate under the YCS and Newcab umbrella, with Desert Cab, Western Cab and Lucky Cab operating the remaining three.
"Despite the deep decline in monthly trips, taxi drivers continue to provide Valley commuters with hundreds of essential rides to grocery stores, pharmacies and medical appointments every day," said Taxi Authority Administrator Scott Whittemore. "Taxi service remains accessible to older passengers and regular customers through easy-to-use ride-hailing apps and online booking platforms."
By comparison, the only trackable driver statistics for ride-hailing companies like Uber and Lyft come from McCarran International Airport, as the Transportation Authority does not require these companies to report monthly.
Flight departures at the airport fell 97 percent in April from a year earlier, from 361,001 departures in April 2019 to 10,363 last month, McCarran data showed.
Las Vegas Cabdrivers Say They're Driven To Cheat
Jonathan Schwartz, director of YCS & New Cab, said the industry has never seen anything like the coronavirus pandemic. Schwartz said the company has had to lay off most of its 1,800 drivers, with fewer than 50 on Valley roads on any given day.
"No one expects their business to go to zero," Schwartz said. “Unfortunately, we have had to lay off most of our drivers until business picks up again. There is almost no traffic on the Strip and almost no traffic going in and out of McCarran.”
The Taxi Authority has issued protocols and directives for taxi operators to follow, including disinfecting high-touch surfaces after each transfer, thorough cleaning after each shift and wearing a mask when transporting passengers.
"As our city reopens as the world's premier tourist destination, our mission is to ensure that the Las Vegas taxi industry remains one of the safest transportation options available," Whittemore said.
Las Vegas Throughout History
With no clear guidelines as to when casino properties will return online and what restrictions will be in place early on, Schwartz said the resort corridor is paying close attention to what it's doing to ensure its brands' n ready to go. the time will come.
"It's based on demand," Schwartz said. "Slowly we are bringing people back because of the demand. There's no way to know until you start seeing the numbers. Much of it will be partially credited to casino reservations. We are watching this very closely. We try to use any data we receive for personnel purposes."
It's hard to know whether the drop in ridership will have a lasting effect on the taxi industry, but it could be a struggle as the increase in ride-hailing services is affected by the increase in ride-hailing services, Schwartz said.
"It's everyone's fight for survival," Schwartz said. "If business doesn't come back soon, we're all going to be fighting for our survival."

A flurry of events is driving up room rates at what is normally a slow time of year for hotel and casino operators. When Nevada lawmakers quietly introduced a bill requiring mandatory 15-minute wait times for ride-sharing companies like Uber and Lyft, public outcry and intense pressure helped fuel the bill in less than 48 hours.
The first public side move exposed a long-simmering rift in the transportation industry between taxi companies - well-funded public policy heavyweights - and startups like Uber, which taxi companies blame for sudden decline in ridership.

After a contentious session in 2015 in which lawmakers approved rules to allow ride-hailing companies to operate on Saturday mornings despite strong opposition from taxi lobbyists, a similar battle could be underway in 2017 with several bills affecting "transportation network companies" (TNCs) .
But the battle between taxi companies and TNCs is not the only transportation issue in this legislative session. Lawmakers are considering bills that would give some airlines tax breaks for freight train crews.
In total, major transportation companies gave $534,450 to Nevada lawmakers before the 2016 election, with the largest donations going to Democratic candidates. Taxi companies received donations mostly from the transportation industry ($327,000), while other big chunks of campaign money came from groups representing truckers and car dealers.
Democrats received the largest share of donations from transportation companies, accounting for nearly $375,000 in contributions, while Republicans totaled $157,200. But they collected $275,250 from the taxi industry. That compares to $44,700 for Republicans during the 2016 campaign cycle.
Grand A Year!
Both sides use a number of well-connected lobbyists - at least 14 represent Uber, including the firms Argentum Partners and Griffin, and six represent Lyft, including lobbyists from the law firm Kaempfer Crowell. But during the 2016 election cycle, campaign donations from these companies were minimal, with Lyft donating just $2,500 to several candidates.
Taxi companies are also well represented in the halls of the legislature; Frias Transportation, the largest taxi donor, has six lobbyists, including members of the law firm Fennemore Craig and The Ferraro Group. Yellow Checker Star Transportation, another major donor, has five registered lobbyists, including former legislators Warren Hardy and William Horne.
Below, we've rounded up all the donations made by major transportation companies to members of the legislature. As always, we've triple checked the numbers and math, but if anything is wrong, please contact us at [email protected] or [email protected].
