N On Africa (IOA) is currently working to accelerate and encourage positive change in the South African youth sector by targeting young people who are unemployed with many companies, organizations and individuals. Voices Unite is an IOA initiative that seeks to offer a platform for young South Africans to express their concerns, ideas and experiences and use these insights to shape the way they lead. As a prelude to this initiative, IOA and research partner Coluinate implemented a pilot study with more than 1,400 respondents across South Africa. In this pilot study, respondents were asked to indicate which issues/topics were always on their minds: first there was crying; second, corruption; and the not employed question was the third most important question (selected by 65% of young respondents).
Youth unemployment affects the social and economic development of South Africa. Although the demand for a highly educated and skilled workforce has increased since 1994, young job seekers with tertiary education are still struggling to find their first job. Statistics from 2016 show that 51% of young people between the ages of 18 and 29 in South Africa have never been employed. To close this gap between young graduates and those who can find gainful employment, county service projects are recommended as one way to provide practical work experience. Volunteering for county service projects is a simple and valuable way for first-time job seekers to gain hands-on work experience.
Work experience allows an individual to 'learn by doing', strengthens motivation and personal drive, gives freedom in decision-making, fosters human relationships and strengthens social values and cohesion. Work experience is essential for individuals due to the competitiveness of the South African employment sector, which companies prioritize. The South African labor market is characterized by structural employers, which means that the economy is not able to provide or create the amount of jobs needed for the state's workforce. This is a challenge for young graduates as they struggle to find a job.
County services refers to work done without pay that benefits others less fortunate. County service creates a competitive ore result and has a direct impact on leadership and organizational skills for students and graduates. This experience gives students the opportunity to engage with the work and the counties that need help, and gives an insight into the challenges these counties face. In addition, students pay attention and reflect on the experiences and lives of others, which provides an insight into the realities of the county. Studies have shown that students who participated in county service were better able to develop a sense of self and social responsibility through intense work with others, which helped to create a personal and collective identity. The university space gives students the opportunity not only to be consumers of educational services but to contribute to their wider county by participating in county projects.

In 2016, Deloitte in the United States conducted an ipact survey to determine whether volunteering and county service give young graduates a better chance of employment than those without that experience. The survey found that businesses were 82% more likely to hire a candidate with volunteer/county service experience. Direct one-to-one volunteering works on 'treatment leadership' skills. This involves good communication skills, decisiveness, responsibility, understanding and the ability to motivate and inspire others. Skills-based volunteering requires people to use their professional skills or unique talents to help with county projects. This type of service is also an effective way for students to learn certain business and organizational skills.
Tactical and technical leadership can be used to describe the type of leadership skill gained in direct and skills-based volunteer work. The survey showed that more than 85% of employers believe that skills-based volunteering improves communication skills, builds character and shows a level of responsibility and understanding. County service also helps build a network of professional contacts, social relationships and other opportunities for employees, also known as 'social capital'. These relationships and the resources that go with them are critical to increasing employees' chances. In 2013, the National and County Service Corporation conducted a large-scale study, with approximately 70,000 respondents, in the United States. The survey helped determine whether volunteering is associated with a greater likelihood of employment for the unemployed. The results indicated that volunteering for county service increased by 27%. For individuals living in rural areas or with a limited educational background, participation in county projects increased their chances of employment by approximately 50%. The study concluded that regardless of economic conditions, volunteering for county projects will benefit employees seeking individuals.
County service gives students and graduates the opportunity to make a difference in a way they see fit, and gain valuable work experience for future paid employees. If one is not sure how to get involved in county work then first find a cause that is personally beneficial, such as social or environmental causes, among others. One way to do this is to use the Obile Going the Extra ile, or GE, application. This is a platform that allows volunteers to collect 'ges' for every tie they take in a county project, which means they can then spend it on artie, petrol and fast food. The Forgood website is another South African platform that allows you to find different organizations and causes that you can donate to or volunteer hours for. These platforms help provide a simple way to access county service and volunteer while providing a pathway for paid employers.
IOA's Voices United pilot study supports a push for county service programs around the mining world as an effective way for future work. In the current South African economic zone, the labor market is expected to become more competitive as mineral companies are less likely to hire than they need. This gives students and graduates the opportunity to think creatively about how to gain work experience to find permanent employment and to expose the realities of life in the county and the labor market to a stage early in their professional development. As can be seen in the statements made by the participants of the Voices Unite pilot study, everyone wants to find other opportunities to apply and gain their experience. One such opportunity is county service programs, which increase the likelihood of future paid employment, while providing the necessary leadership and organizational skills needed in the workplace.
