Jackie Fisher, senior director of automotive testing at Consumer Reports, said in a telephone interview that the brand rankings are based on detailed model-by-model survey responses for the past three model years.

Fisher said the idea behind the survey was to predict the reliability of new cars and trucks through 2022 based on their recent history, which would benefit new buyers. Consumer Reports also breaks down used car prices.
Unlike another famous survey that sounds similar, J.D. Reliability studies of motor vehicles. But it's not quite the same. Instead of responding to vehicles up to and including three models, Power's survey only asks owners about new 3-year-old vehicles.
The Consumer Reports 2021 Auto Reliability Report is based on data collected from consumers about their experiences with more than 300,000 vehicles. The annual survey is a full questionnaire that asks respondents to rate a long list of household purchases, not cars.
Individual models that were introduced for the first time or were recently completely redesigned are exceptions to this rule, Fisher said. If the current 2022 model is based on a design more than three years old, the price will likely be based on the results of the last model year or two. Instead of rating "old" models, he says, keep the results relevant to today's new car buyers.

While there are exceptions, the key takeaway from the survey is that on average, new or redesigned models have more than their fair share of problems, so manufacturers may be wise to hold off on buying a new model until the problem is resolved sooner.
"We don't tell people what to buy. But if reliability is important to you, it's a good proposition," says Fisher. On the other hand, many consumers are willing to ignore the here and there and get the latest technology.
"The important thing is that you know what you are doing. "Tesla is a good example of that," Fisher said. "People like to shop. Are they hoping there won't be too much trouble with it? It is impossible."
Earlier this year, J.D. In Power's survey, Tesla was not officially ranked due to its small sample size. However, its unofficial score was the lowest in the 2021 Preliminary Quality Study, with "things going wrong" in the first 90 days of ownership. Still, Tesla's unofficial score is No. 1 in the 2021 Vehicle Performance Execution and Placement (APEAL) study, which measures how people like their recent purchase.
