CDT is the most effective treatment for chronic extremity lymphedema. Primary lymphedema (congenital) and secondary lymphedema (due to a damaged lymphatic system) respond very well to this gentle, non-invasive and highly effective therapy. CDT is sometimes referred to as Definitive Decongestive Physiotherapy (CDP).

MLD is a very gentle manual treatment that improves the function of the lymphatic system throughout the body. In lymphedema therapy, MLD is used to redirect lymph flow around a blocked area and into healthy lymphatic vessels that extend into the venous circulation. MLD is also an effective treatment for post-surgical swelling, post-traumatic edema (such as sports injuries), migraine headaches, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia and other conditions associated with edema.

Compression therapy increases tissue pressure and improves the efficiency of muscles and pump joints. Multi-layer compression bandages are applied between MLD treatments to help prevent accumulation of evacuated fluid. If the patient's limb is sufficiently degraded by repeated treatments, they can be fitted with compression garments.

Lymphedema And Chronic Edema

Exercises are performed with compression bandages in place to activate the muscles and joint pumps of the affected extremity. This leads to an increased lymphokinetic activity and further reduction of the swollen limb over time.

Skin care and general hygiene are essential to eliminate bacterial and fungal growth that can cause repeated attacks of cellulitis or erysipelas. Infections are a very common complication of lymphedema so careful skin and nail care is an essential part of treatment.

Before starting the classroom (lab) portion of the course, you will complete a 75-hour online home study module that introduces you to lymphedema and the techniques used to treat it. The lessons ensure that every student who enters the classroom has a thorough understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system. The module consists of lectures and graphically dynamic video demonstrations. This includes a lecture by Dr. Kathleen Francis, one of the few doctors in the United States who specialize in lymphedema. An accompanying course manual reinforces the video presentations. The Home Study Module MUST be completed before starting the classroom (lab) portion.

When skillfully applied, this therapeutic form of soft tissue mobilization greatly improves lymph formation and promotes drainage within the superficial and deep systems of the vascular lymphatic network. MLD also promotes general relaxation and detoxification.

During this course, students will be instructed in the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system and will demonstrate and practice basic MLD treatment sequences. In addition, MLD treatment sequences for mild upper and lower extremity lymphedema that are not medically complicated will be taught. Each day is divided into two parts: theoretical application and practical application.
