KINGSTON, R.I. - January 7, 2020 - Sydney Page knew from an early age that she wanted to be a veterinarian. The University of Rhode Island junior also realized she wanted to study abroad at some point during her college years.
Pre Vet Study Abroad Programs
So last fall she combined her interests and spent a semester gaining experience in veterinary medicine with a variety of animals in Thailand. Affiliated with the Loop Abroad research organization, Page was one of 14 students who studied veterinary medicine around the world while volunteering with elephants, sea turtles, zoos and dogs and cats.

"It was exactly what I was looking for, and it was really amazing," said Page, an animal scientist in Eliot, Maine. "All the classes are taught by veterinarians, and we have lots of hands-on opportunities."
Every two weeks, she and her classmates visit different animal care centers to shadow the veterinarians who work there, take lessons and volunteer their time and skills. They spent two weeks at the dog shelter taking classes in small animal handling and medicine, for example, and then learned surgical nurse skills by helping out at the spay and neuter clinic.
"We served as vet-techs at the clinic and learned all the pre-treatment skills, monitoring animals through surgery, administering anesthesia and monitoring their recovery," Page said. "We helped them clear 125 animals in four days."
Her favorite experience was a two-week tour to learn about medicine and elephant management at the elephant sanctuary, including administering medicine to the animals.

"You don't know how smart elephants are until you meet them," she said. "You can teach anything. We trained some of the young elephants to give different parts of their bodies to assess health, and they picked up quickly. And they are very interactive with people. It was an experience. You can't go back home. And she loved it."
Page also learned to dive while studying marine life and spent two weeks learning about wildlife conservation while working at a zoo.
"I went into it knowing that I wanted to be a veterinarian, but I didn't really know what kind of veterinary medicine I wanted to do, so I was hoping that the experience would help me figure it out. And it did. " She said "I debated doing sea or wild animals, but I found that I really like working with dogs and cats. I like the personal interaction you have with animals that are used to being around people."
"I didn't know anything about Thailand coming in, but I found the Thai people very sweet and welcoming," she said. "When they found out I could speak a little Thai, they were very happy. It felt very safe. Chaing Maina has a cafe where you can pet cats and dogs while you have your coffee."

With two semesters to go before she finishes her degree, Page is focusing on some of her toughest classes — biology, cell biology, genetics and animal nutrition — and beginning the vet school application process. She will also continue to sing with the acapella group Rhody Rhapsodies and the Teacher Players.
"I don't really have a choice about where I go to the vet," she said. "I'm just happy that now I'm sure I want to focus on dogs and cats, and I'm ready to get started." You do not need to have previous experience to do a veterinary internship abroad. You can join from the age of 16. You will work under the supervision of professionals, and we will teach you everything you need to know.

This type of experience is invaluable, and helps build a strong foundation in the veterinary profession.
