A team led by the University of Arizona lowered the temperature of the last ice age — the last glacial 20,000 years ago — to 46 degrees Fahrenheit.

Their results will allow climate scientists to better understand the relationship between the current increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere - a major greenhouse gas - and global temperatures.

The Last Glacial Maximum, or LGM, was a cold period when ice sheets covered half of North America, Europe and most of South America and Asia, but cold-weather plants and animals flourished.
"There's a lot of data on this period because it's been studied for so long," said Jessica Tierney, an assistant professor in the Department of Geology at the University of Arizona. "But one question that science has long sought to answer is simple: How cold was it during the Ice Age?"
It found that the average global temperature during the Ice Age was 6 degrees Celsius (11 F) cooler than today. For context, the global average during the 20th century was 14 C (57 F).
"It may not seem like a big change in your personal experience, but it really is a big change," Tierney said.

He and his team created maps to show the temperature changes in specific regions around the world.
"In North America and Europe, most of the north was covered with ice and it was very cold. Here in Arizona there was also a big cooling," said Tierney. "But the biggest cooling was in high latitudes like the Arctic, where it should be. 14 C (25 F) colder than today."
"Climate models predict that high latitudes will be warmer than low latitudes," Tierney said. "When you look at future projections, the Arctic is very warm. It's called polar warming. Likewise, during the LGM, we see the opposite pattern.
Knowing ice age temperatures is important because they are used to calculate climate sensitivity, that is, how global temperatures change in response to carbon emissions. atmosphere.

Tierney and his team determined that for every doubling of carbon in the atmosphere, global temperatures would have to rise by 3.4 C (6.1 F), which is in the middle of range predicted by climate models (1.8 to 5.6 C).
The level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere during the ice age was 180 parts per million, which is very low. Before the Industrial Revolution, the level rose to about 280 parts per million, and today it stands at 415 parts per million.
"The Paris Agreement aims to keep global warming to no more than 2.7 F (1.5 C) above pre-industrial levels, but with greenhouse gas emissions rising carbon as high as they are, it will be very difficult to avoid more than 3.6 F (2 C) of warming," Tierney said. Since there were no thermometers during the Ice Age, Tierney and his team developed a model to translate data collected from marine plankton fossils into ocean temperatures. They then combined the fossil data with climate model simulations of the LGM using a technique called data assimilation used in climate predictions.

"What happens at the weather office is measuring temperature, pressure, humidity and using those measurements to update forecast models and predict the weather," Tierney said. "Here, we use the Boulder, Colorado-based National Center for Atmospheric Research Climate Model to produce a hindcast of the LGM, and then update this hindcast with real-time data to predict climate."
In the future, Tierney and his team plan to use the same technique to recreate Earth's past warm periods.
"If we can reconstruct past warm climates, we can begin to answer important questions about how the Earth responds to high levels of carbon dioxide and improve our understanding of the potential for future climate change." ," he said.
