Jim Landis advised hundreds of visitors to the Mecum Las Vegas Touring Car Auction Thursday morning: "Bid early and often."
Mecum Auctions Inc. Auctioneer Landis shared the idea before selling the first vehicle, a 1969 BSA motorcycle, for $5,500.
The three-day show, which began Thursday at the Las Vegas Convention Center, features 1,000 cars, from a 1914 Ford Model T to a 2022 McLaren 720S Spider.

"It's like a motorsports event, it's a car show where everything is for sale," said Mecum CEO Sam Murtaugh.
But organizing an event can be stressful work, especially for these fast-talking auctioneers. Murtaugh said Mecum uses a rotation of three auctioneers who run the show for 20 minutes and take a 40-minute break.
He noted that around 20,000 people are expected at this year's show, open to the public, who can attend as spectators or bidders.
"It's got everything," said Ralph Garcia, a Las Vegas resident who has attended many Mecum shows around the country.

Cars for the Las Vegas auction were given to Mecum from sellers all over the country, but Murtaugh said each auction tends to feature regional car selections.
Some marquee vehicles are tied to Las Vegas' past, such as a 1971 Stutz Blackhawk formerly owned by Elvis Presley and a 1933 Packard Twelve Sedan Limousine owned by Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel. Both cars will cross the auction block Saturday, said David Morton, director of communications and event marketing for Mecum Auctions.
We love selling through Mecum Auctions because it provides a "higher level" of visibility and professionalism compared to other methods of selling classic vehicles. But what he really loves is the community the auctions create.
"You can look at what other car builders are doing to get ideas," says Horrell. "The social aspect is enriched by the automotive community that comes together at this auction."

Murtaugh said the auction can build an audience by traveling around the country while broadcasting its events on television and online.
Jim and Teresa Roberts learned about Mecum Auctions after watching its events on TV and finally decided to check it out in person. The pair hails from Brooklyn, Michigan, opening the Body Shop last month at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and last weekend at the NHRA Nevada Men's Specialty Market Team Show in Las Vegas.
The couple were impressed by the variety of cars, saying they would only buy a car if it was in their must-have condition and price range.
Prices available at the show - The 2003 Porsche 911 sold for $24,000, about 25 percent less than the $32,100 seen on Kelley Blue Book.

Tickets are $20 in advance or $30 at the door per guest. Children under 12 enter for free. Bidder tickets are available online at Mecum.com for $200-$500 and include two admissions.
Mecum Auctions is located in Kansas City; Missouri December 1-3 then Kissimmee; Florida Jan. It will roll around Las Vegas this weekend before heading to the 4th-15th.

The union allowed the center's food service provider to vote unanimously, but bargaining teams are still negotiating the contract.
