States have a year or two to adopt it: NEC 2011 is the latest version, but Washington is still in NEC 2008, for fun political reasons.

One of these assets. The NEC, while it is the law; it's actually made by a commercial company, which means the code will cost you money, and not the least of it: NEC 2011 costs $75. Unfortunately, when the state updates the new version of the code, each electronic device in the state must buy a new copy, and take different classes on the new rules. The criminal incentive for the NFPA is to produce as many inventions as possible, extracting as much rent from their legal monopoly.
The licensing exams are open, but I didn't want to give the NFPA my money, so I downloaded a PDF copy of the 2008 NEC, and studied that.
That was the first attempt. The second test is in 19.28 RCW, the Washington State law governing electrical work.
Both these exams are administered by PSI Exams, a recognized organization for state governments to deliver exam administration. There might be all kinds of kickbacks and bribery going on here, I don't want to dig too deep.
