Trucking Companies In Augusta Georgia - Augusta's business history has seen many moving, transfer and storage companies. But one lasted longer than the others. H&S Transfer Co., in Gordon Park Road, is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year.
H&S President and CEO Ken Heyman has been with the company for 44 years, in a profession he said was not his first choice.

"I got my bachelor's degree in urban economics from Georgia State University," he said. "I was thinking about working for a city planner or something."

H&S Transfer began in July 1942 and was founded by Bertie Harrison, her son Fred Harrison Jr. and Ray Swann.
Bertie Harrison was the widow of Fred Harrison Sr., who until his death in 1940 ran his own moving company, Reliable Transfer, and was a partner in T.R. Maxwell Furniture Co.
But H and S in H&S didn't stay together for long. Fred Jr. enlisted in the army, and when he returned from World War II in 1946, he became more involved in the family's furniture business.
Business - Swann Transfer and Storage - and the partners in H&S were bought out by Augustan Nathan Moog, who ran the business for the next 25 years.

Heyman, fresh out of college in 1973, was married to Moog's niece. And Moog - who had lost his only son in the Vietnam War in 1966 - was looking for someone with family connections to bring into the business.
"He asked me if I wanted to come to work," Heyman recalled. "I wasn't crazy about it, but here I am, 44 years later."
Apart from the company name, one trace of H&S's original ownership remains. When Swann started his own company, he was the registered agent for Mayflower Transit, a moving company long known for its iconic sailboat logo.
When Swann went out of business in 1974, Mayflower came to H&S. Moving and storage companies usually act as local agents for national companies.

"Years ago we were associated with a company called Burnham Van Service. Mr. Moog and Mr. Burnham were good friends and that's why he represented Burnham for years," Heyman said. "When the Mayflower came to us at that time, we represented the American Red Ball. Mr. Moog was reluctant. He said, ' Why do you want to do that? I said, 'Why
H&S still represents the Mayflower today. While H&S also handles office moves, hotel/motel installations, and even some record storage, the vast majority of its business is home moving. And the most moving families in the Augusta area, as has been the case for decades, are military households.
"Primarily military, especially with the Cyber Center, there are a lot of things that go into it," Heyman said. Most of H&S's 20,000-square-foot warehouse contains human-related items attached to Fort Gordon, which will be home to the U.S. Army Cyber Command until 2020.
The military's influence on health and safety has not changed over the years. But other parts of the business have changed.

In the early 1980s, the federal government deregulated the trucking industry, eliminating fees that trucking companies charged at mostly flat rates.
Also, "Moving household items has always been based on weight and it's just a guessing game," Heyman said. "Then all of a sudden, I think in the early '80s, we were allowed to make binding assessments. So we put pressure on the burden, but we guarantee that there won't be more burden, to protect the consumer."
Another big change will hit the world of trucks on December 18. On that date, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration will require electronic shutdown devices for all 2000 or newer trucks in interstate commerce.
Previously, trucks recorded their mileage on paper. But citing safety and the need for drivers to get plenty of rest, the new ELDs on long-haul trucks limit drivers to just 11 hours of travel per day — whether they like it or not.

"Actually when they hit the limit, there's no bullshit. The truck shuts down," Heyman said. "I've heard horror stories before with some guys who have these electronic diaries."
And these guys are part of a shrinking population. Help wanted sections are full of ads looking for drivers. The shortage of qualified truck drivers is projected to reach a record 50,000 by the end of 2017, according to Bob Costello, chief economist for the American Motor Carrier Association.
"It's not a fun job," Heyman said. "Young people don't want to drive. They are away from home for weeks, sometimes even a month. It can be very profitable. And in our business it's not just driving. He was loading and unloading furniture. There is money, but young people don't want to be far from home."
Heyman was one of those guys when he started. He is now 66 years old, and he bought the company in 1979. Moog died in 1976. In an executive order, Kemp temporarily suspended federal regulations on the number of hours truck drivers can drive. The order also states that sick or tired drivers must take at least 10 hours off when they stop.

The last few months have affected them in different ways. Some say they had to take on heavier loads to meet the needs. Others say their working hours have been shortened to use less fuel.
How this order affects them depends on the company, but it may have an indirect effect on you.
Kemp's executive order will reduce how long commercial drivers can be on the road. It also prohibits price gouging, especially at the pumps. The order takes effect on April 16 and will last for 30 days. Kemp hopes this will limit disruptions in the supply chain.
One driver told us that the cost of filling his tank reached $1,000. This is a $500 jump from the average.

Some drivers say that they have already taken on heavier loads, which makes it easier to meet needs under the order.
Lacy Enevoldsen, Good Earth's manager said, "It was definitely a bit of a challenge and you have to be a bit creative about how you find things."

Timber Products Co. has acquired a 20-acre facility in Thomson to serve as the eastern hub for its rapidly expanding TP Logistics unit.
Timber Products says the acquisition will enable it to provide full third-party logistics services, an enhanced customer experience and expand its vertical integration in the Southeast.

It has 75,000 square feet of interior storage space and will include a maintenance shop, driver's lounge, truck wash and tarp, as well as additional storage space outside. In addition to truck and transhipment services, the facility has rail access.
Warehouse employees will be able to track warehouse inventory and shipments in real time, as well as store, load/unload, reload and remove containers.
Long-term plans include adding more trucks to the fleet, full service, a two-part workshop to maintain Class A trucks and equipment, and the ability to transport more than 20 cars a week.
It is the first in a series of planned acquisitions as TP Logistics begins to expand its operations across the United States.
