Best Cell Phone Plans Of 2022: Compare Plans & Prices
Changing wireless providers is not easy. Although there are three major networks in the United States, the actual number of wireless carriers and systems is much higher. Sorting through this huge, confusing mess can overwhelm us, but we want to simplify the process. How to choose a mobile subscription in 2022.
There are three major networks in the United States: AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. All three offer services directly and have strong networks across the country offering 4G LTE and 5G.
The most important aspect of choosing a network is finding one that works in your area. This makes it difficult for us to give a general recommendation for any provider. For example, T-Mobile service in New York may be great, but if you're in rural Iowa, Verizon is more reliable.
While the mileage varies, the good news is that these networks continue to grow and improve, especially as the big three compete to cover the US with 5G. You may have left a network ten years ago complaining about poor service, but now it's on the rise due to a customer arms race.

If you know friends or family in your area who already use the provider you are considering, ask about their experience. You can visit a carrier's store and see if they offer a free way to try service before switching, such as T-Mobile's Network Pass, which allows you to try T-Mobile service for free for three months. Verizon now offers a similar 30-day "Test Drive" program, while prepaid service Cricket recently launched its own trial program that lets you try out AT&T's parent network.
Here's a comparison of the latest plans from AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. In this chart, we've focused on the cheapest plan from each provider, as well as their 'middle of the road' options, which we think will be useful to most people.
It's worth noting that some plans, like T-Mobile Magenta and Verizon Play More, include streaming benefits like Netflix or the Disney Bundle (Disney Plus, ESPN Plus, and Hulu).
Verizon Play More and AT&T Unlimited Extra don't require all lines to be on the same plan, so if only one line in your family plan needs extra hotspot data, you can drop the rest to cheaper options and save a little there. (Verizon only requires one line on the account to be on Google Play More to earn your Disney Rewards).

If you want more lines on T-Mobile and its cheapest price, you're better off going with the regular Essentials plan. In a promotion launched by the service provider, it is available for $105 for four lines.

While AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon operate large networks, many smaller wireless carriers offer over-the-air service. First, there are prepaid brands that belong to each carrier. Verizon is visible, AT&T is Cricket, and T-Mobile is Metro. Each uses the appropriate parent network for the service.
Small players also rely on large networks for resources. For example, Mint Mobile and Google Fi use the T-Mobile network, while cable companies Comcast and Spectrum rely on Verizon for their Xfinity Mobile and Spectrum Mobile products.
Cdma Vs. Gsm: What's The Difference?
Boost Mobile, currently owned by Dish, uses a combination of T-Mobile and AT&T, while Dish is building its own 5G network. Dish recently started offering its service to compete with the big carriers, which they call Boost Infinite. It's in beta before a full launch in 2023.
These smaller carriers—many of which are called MVNOs, or mobile network operators—have the advantage of being able to access the services of a larger carrier at a lower price. If you find that Verizon works better where you live, but its service is more expensive, switching to Visible, Spectrum Mobile, or Xfinity Mobile may allow you to keep the same coverage but pay less (although you may lose some benefits, such as streaming services for free).
We've broken down some of these carriers, including which carrier uses which network, and explained some trade-offs to keep in mind.

Two-year contracts have largely disappeared from the US wireless market. Unfortunately, they now seem to be replaced by increasingly long installments.
In last year's iPhone 13 deals, AT&T offered a free device if you agreed to a 36-month installment plan. T-Mobile has asked for a 30-month commitment to close deals, while Verizon is trying to go from 24 to 30 months. Verizon has followed AT&T and only offers a 36-month installment plan. Both carriers will use this common practice in 2022 devices from Apple, Google, and Samsung.
T-Mobile still has 24-month options, but more expensive devices like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 require a 36-month plan if you want to finance them monthly.
With these long timelines, you can get a flagship phone for a lot less money, but you'll have to stick with that company for two to three years (and probably a more expensive unlimited plan). If you leave before the end of the period, you risk paying the phone balance, which some carriers require before they "unlock" the device for use on other networks.

Major carriers often offer hundreds of dollars in replacements, which can help subsidize the replacement price. But before you go, you may want to check your account online or visit your carrier's store to see how much you still owe on your phone.
Modernizing phones and networks means your existing phone will work well with the new provider. All the major wireless carriers offer a similar selection of the latest devices, especially when it comes to the iPhone and Galaxy lines.
To get the most out of any button, you'll probably want to take this opportunity to upgrade your device, especially if it's a few years old and doesn't have modern features like 5G. When you add or open a new line, there are often additional offers to help you pay off your installment plan or get a better device.
If you choose to keep what you have, your existing device will work fine as long as it is activated with your previous carrier.

Keep in mind that all carriers offer additional savings that you may qualify for based on your employer, military status, student status, or age. If you take out a family plan, a family member may be eligible even if you are not.
In particular, first responders, members of the military, veterans, nurses and teachers can receive discounts from all major carriers. Verizon offers student discounts, while T-Mobile's Work benefits can shave $10 a month off a Magenta Max subscription, and AT&T offers a similar plan for its Unlimited Premium and Elite plans, which it calls Signature.
If you're 55 or older, you may also qualify for a discounted plan: T-Mobile offers discount plans nationwide for $55 a month for two lines, while Verizon and AT&T offer similar options, but only to Florida residents.
This will save you money when you switch, or maybe lower your current rate a bit and save you the hassle of switching providers.
Android Phone Won't Make Calls? 10 Ways To Fix
Many major carriers offer rewards with their unlimited plans, especially streaming services. Verizon offers the Disney Bundle (Disney Plus, Hulu, and ESPN Plus) with an unlimited subscription to Play More and Get More, and T-Mobile offers Netflix, Paramount Plus, and Apple TV Plus with -Magenta and Magenta Max. The Paramount offer is also available for those with older T-Mobile or Sprint plans.
Even smaller prepaid carriers like Cricket (HBO Max with ads), Metro by T-Mobile (Amazon Prime Video), and US Mobile (various options) offer benefits with their unlimited plans.
Additionally, some Verizon plans (such as the premium Get More option) include Apple Music, while T-Mobile Magenta and Magenta Max offer unlimited Wi-Fi and data abroad. T-Mobile Metro offers 100GB of Google One storage and Amazon Prime membership. AT&T is giving you six months of free gaming with Nvidia GeForce Now.
