What Is The Area Code For California
Once upon a time, when the world was young and there were only telephones, one code ruled everything from the Mexican border to Bakersfield: 213.
New Area Code Could Be Coming To 909 Zone In Inland Empire
Then it started dividing and multiplying. 714 was born, then 805, then L.A. It is the first burgh within the city limits to have three area codes.
Today, nearly 75 years after the birth of 213, Los Angeles County has 10 area codes, eight rooted in geography and two floating above 310 and 818.
Do you understand your area code? We make do with what we have, where we tear apart the kind of historical markers that other cities rely on to guide their identity, in a crazed megalopolis that fuses city with indistinguishable city.
In 1991, a year before more than two million phones were taken from the new 310 area code 213, said James Katz, a sociologist who studied the impact of telephone technology on society, but Californians were more ambivalent than people. Elsewhere, but these three figures are like compass points on our mental map, so that "when you remove the number, you destroy the identity."

Los Angeles is a tough place. In this weekly feature, Pat Morrison explains his approach, history and culture.
Since the "big bang" of the original 213 eliminated many area codes, what happened to those signals? In 1994, a Times op-ed writer explained what a numerologist had told him, perhaps in tongues: 213, LA's original heart, symbolized the working class, "no hypocrisy." How did the numerologist get rid of the fact that 213 is the code for the citizens of Los Angeles, almost all about political hypocrisy? The phone of 310 has "the high, formal, informal world", and the phone of 818 - from valley to valley, from San Fernando to San Gabriel - is the embodiment of "outdated values".
A numerologist discovers that Manhattan's favorite 212 represents "some desperation," a reference to Elaine's desire to return her lost 212 phone in an episode of "Seinfeld."
L.A. A place like no other. You have a question. Pat Morrison may have the answer, I'm sure he knows.
Area Code: Everything To Know About San Jose Local Phone Numbers
The telephone may be a geographical marker, but it is not destiny. Can't afford a home in Laguna Beach? By buying phone numbers for sale on sites like phonenumberguy.com, you can still buy gold numbers from yacht dealers and real housewives in the 949 area code.
Ed Manns, the site's owner, told the Washington Post several years ago that 310 is the most popular of all area codes. "They're very rare. People can't even get a 310, a 310." As for the overlay, we're snobs, having recently arrived. "Nobody," Manns said, "wants a 424, especially if they're running a business."
This begs the question: Why aren't phone numbers needed in a desired area code when all area codes are running out so fast that phone companies are requesting new ones?
In 1999, the California Public Utilities Commission asked the feds to turn the company-phone into a real vendor because SBC Telecom was pushing the feds to OK higgledy-piggledy area overlays around the country, to no avail. Californians, the CPUC said, already thought "the number of deficits is meaningless, and the need to create a new area code is fraudulent."
Area Code 559
Next to La Cienega near Inglewood. at Beverly Hills High School. In people's backyards in Echo Park. On top of Signal Hill. Oil wells are everywhere in and around L.A. You definitely can't see it in Paris (France).
Who first developed these area codes? Why did Vermont get 802 and Southern California 213?
The answer is the word "dial". We ditched the dial for the keyboard, but in 1947, the year the area code was introduced, "cht-cht-cht" was the sound of the rotary dial snapping back into place.
So, the lower the number of the phone number, the less time it takes to return the call, so you can call the next one. Larger cities—Manhattan, Los Angeles, Chicago—received lower-numbered area codes that could be speed-dialed 212, 213, 312. States with less population were given higher numbers. In Vermont and Hawaii, locals prefer codes and caps printed with the state's unique area codes, 802 and 808, like graduates of some college coding school.
