Baggage has announced that American Airlines has increased its basic economy checked bag fee on flights from the US to Europe and Africa from $60 to $75. These new higher rates apply to tickets booked on or after today, Tuesday 21 April - Base Economy fares booked earlier will pay the lower rate.

Talk about bad timing - bad optics. For starters, American and other major U.S. airlines have received more than $50 billion from the federal government to stay afloat as travel has slowed due to the coronavirus. Paying more for baggage and accepting taxpayer money to survive is not a good idea.

Plus, Americans don't fly to Europe right now -- or internationally, for that matter. The airline currently operates three international flights: Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) and Miami (MIA), London-Heathrow (LHR) and Dallas-Tokyo-Narita (NRT). It won't exactly be a blizzard, though, with two flights between the US and Europe and more planes remaining empty than before.

Of course, these higher fees will apply to all flights booked from today, once normal travel resumes, including flights to other destinations in Europe and Africa.

"Effective today (Tuesday, April 21), American is changing its checked bag fees for basic economy passengers on transatlantic flights to better align with our partners Atlantic Business, British Airways, Iberia and Finnair," American said in a statement. "These changes apply to new Economy Class ticket purchasers on transatlantic flights beginning April 21."

Fortunately, there's an easy way to avoid this increase: don't check your bag. These higher fees give you more reasons to fill your wallet.

In most cases, you can bring a small bag or backpack on board, but checked baggage may incur an additional charge. If you're someone who doesn't usually pack light, whether you want to check or carry on luggage, you're looking for an airline with free bags.

In this case, there is only one domestic airline in all cabins and regardless of your elite status level: Southwest Airlines.

Travelers appreciate Southwest Airlines because of its transparent fares and minimal surcharges. In fact, Southwest Airlines charges relatively low fees.

Gulf Air Offers Free Extra Baggage Allowance For University Students

That's right. According to Southwest's baggage policy, any passenger can check in up to two bags at no extra charge. Checked bags must not exceed 62 inches (L+W+H) or weigh more than 50 pounds to be checked for free. Bags over 62 inches (and up to 80 inches) and weighing between 51 and 100 pounds will be charged an overweight and excess bag fee of Rs.75. A $75 fee will apply to customers who wish to check a third wallet.

Southwest Airlines is the only domestic airline with free checked baggage for all passengers regardless of fare or loyalty status.

Some airlines offer free checked baggage on certain routes, such as longer international routes. It is best to check with each airline for each trip as it varies.

You won't find another US carrier that offers similar prices for all flights. If you want to check your bags and fly frequently, flying Southwest may make sense.

Airline Credit Cards That Offer Free Checked Bags

Some people who choose the cheapest flight may get off easy, but may be hit with extra fees because some basic economy fares don't include baggage space. This means they will have to pay to check a small suitcase on wheels.

If you want to avoid checked bag fees on your flight and you haven't earned elite status with your favorite airline, consider applying for an airline credit card. Most airline credit cards offer free checked baggage.

It's rare to find US airlines with free checked baggage. Southwest Airlines is the only airline with no baggage fees. For other airlines, you'll need to get elite status or book tickets with the airline's credit card. Otherwise, you'll have to pay for a checked bag, especially if you're buying the basic economy fare, which doesn't even include the benefits of air bags.
