Cheapest Way To Get Kitchen Cabinets
Our distressed oak kitchen has been DIY'd over the years. From a glass tile backsplash to some new appliances and I painted the kitchen cabinets white for the first time. It's funny how we see our decorating choices and our decorating styles evolve as we age.
How To Make Oak Kitchen Cabinets Look Modern (without Painting)
We definitely bought our house when it was oak and even 8 years ago beige was still a good color choice. We still love our favorite neutral wall color, but our style and tastes have evolved. The good news for us is that we can use inexpensive DIY projects to update our kitchen once again.
Now we try to find more timeless options when choosing our home decor. However, we didn't want to add anything new to this kitchen if we didn't have to. So what do we do if things are good but ugly?
Painting the cabinets and our tile backsplash really transformed this kitchen to fit our current aesthetic perfectly. A fresh coat of paint can only go so long. I even tried to get away with painting the lower cabinets.
Here are some kitchen appliances made without painting oak cabinets! We love all the modern touches!
How To Organize Your Kitchen
According to Home Advisor, a professional cabinet painter can charge "$100 per door and $25 per drawer, or $75-$150 per cabinet." Spraying and brushing/rolling alone are usually similar expenses. Yes, you will get a better finish with a sprayer (but at what cost)?
For reference, our kitchen has 12 upper cabinets with doors, 3 drawer levels and an island with two cabinets and 11 lower cabinet doors and 12 drawers. The overall layout of our kitchen is 12' x 14' = 168 square feet.
Upper cabinets are about 40 square feet. ft., and lower cabinets in cm. 43.5 square feet of closet space.
So using the painting statistics above, our estimate is that a professional paint job to professionally spray paint our kitchen cabinets would cost around $2800.
Tips On How To Paint Kitchen Cabinets
About $150 for paint and supplies. Please note that we also have paint and supplies left over. It's safe to say that having your kitchen professionally painted won't cost hundreds of dollars.
The $150 spent on paint and supplies (new foam roller, frog tape, deglosser, paint pen) was definitely worth it not only to paint the cabinets, but also the back tile.
Since our cabinets were already primed and painted white, I didn't need to prime them. Here we talk about how to repaint painted cabinets. For this inexpensive kitchen remodel (8 years later), I purchased a gallon of SW Rookwood Sash Green and SW Emerald Urethane Trim in the base color (high reflective white). I have about half a gallon left of each paint and used white paint to paint the background as well.
We compared different white paints and settled on the purest and purest emerald paint color. We didn't want to contrast with the current whiteness of our molds. Be sure to test the paint colors in different lighting conditions and compare them to the actual paint colors on the cast.
Expert Tips On Painting Your Kitchen Cabinets
Sherwin Williams says that one gallon of paint should cover about 100 square feet. With my calculations above, I can understand why I have a little over ½ gallon of paint left. I'm still a little short on green because I also had to paint the outside of the island and didn't factor that into my square footage estimates.
At our local store, the list price is $95.99. Proclassic was our paint of choice (before we discovered Emerald) and it was 79.99. However, don't let those prices fool you. I was able to get a 30% discount. I paid about $67 a gallon for emerald urethane enamel sealer.
Pro tip: When shopping for paint at Sherwin Williams, I always make sure to buy paint that's on sale. In the past, they even offered a 40% discount during the summer. However, my store partner told me that it didn't happen this year because of the supply shortage they were experiencing.
This lack of paint actually prevented me from checking the bottom color of the kitchen cabinets. But I found Sampilze and it was a saving grace. I often use these large peel and stick swatches when trying new colors.
Can I Buy A High Quality Cheap Kitchen?
You can always make your own boards and try to deal with this mess. Or order these. We wrote all about our Samplize experience here.
Actually the glass mosaic that was once in the kitchen. We had to take it out and redo everything or try to paint it. If it looks terrible, we remove it anyway.
However, this DIY kitchen project turned out much better than I expected. We love the clean and simple look. The only thing that's a bit off is bright white with our current counters, but white was definitely the safest bet for color.
We love our two-tone cabinets. A few years ago I would not have thought of doing this. But with young children, the idea of dark lower cabinets was really appealing. Everyone who came always comments how they like this color.

Hopefully my home decor tastes won't change too much. If they do, they can always try another budget-friendly kitchen renovation to suit their current tastes.
Amazing My wife and I are slowly, very slowly, updating our own kitchen. Most recently we refinished the cabinets in Coral Springs and it looks great. We are thinking of renovating our pantry or getting new hardwood floors next.
Hi Erin, Thanks for sharing your experience. Much appreciated. May I ask if you can see the wood grain after painting? How much did you sand and how did it hold up? I have very similar rails and cabinets and Google brought me to your story. thank you
Hello Selina. Painting the lower kitchen cabinets with Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel was a game changer. Our painted oak in our SW proclassic home looks great, but after 8 years it needed some touching up. This led me to add color and repaint the white. I didn't mind seeing a bit of grain, the emerald line eliminated any tannin bleeding I had. If you are worried about grain, you can always use a product called Aqua coat. I will put a link in the post above. Good luck with your DIY kitchen remodeling project.
Kitchen Diy Renovation Pt. 1: Cabinet Makeover
I like this! It's two-toned and looks amazing and makes your kitchen feel fresh and open and looks a lot cleaner with kids running around than white ones. Painting my cabinets has been on the to-do list for a long time, but I never wanted to commit to starting it and have to stop or screw something up halfway through. I like the idea of painting the back to give it an update. Having trouble painting over mosaic tiles? Thanks for sharing!
Hi Alex. Thank you for your comment about our two-tone kitchen cabinets. We love the green and white cabinets, and the backsplash tile project was honestly one of the easiest DIY painting projects we've ever done.
Hi, I really like the pictures behind the kitchen. I don't even think that a little money can make a big impact in our kitchen. Thanks for sharing this article. Well, we recently remodeled our kitchen and cut a lot of costs by making our own kitchen cabinets.
So I thought anyone remodeling a kitchen would appreciate an article highlighting DIY kitchen cabinet options. It may seem like a big project to take on.
Is It Cheaper To Paint Or Replace Kitchen Cabinets?
However, the money saved is (in my opinion) well worth the time and effort involved in making your own cabinets.
If you're a visual person, this might not be your dream DIY toilet tutorial. But if you're someone who can look at plans and visualize them, you might want to take a quick look at these plans.
However, this tutorial seems to be quite detailed and also provides many pictures to guide you through the build.
This isn't exactly a tutorial, but it does show a lot of great pictures of an absolutely gorgeous kitchen. But what stood out to me were the chicken wire cabinet doors.
