Uber operates in more than 10,000 cities worldwide, and the uniqueness of the brand is comforting when faced with a trip from a foreign airport. But the cost of Uber varies from city to city, so it's best to prepare with a decent idea of how much it might cost you to open the app.
We use Uber's pricing tool to calculate the average cost of a 10 km (6.2 mile) Uber trip from the center of each world capital where Uber operates. We then repeated the process for the 30 largest cities in the United States and the United Kingdom where Uber has a presence.
For all cities in our study, we manually maintained a 10 km trip and ran the price estimator three separate times to collect prices for weekday morning hours (around 8 a.m.), afternoon hours (off-peak), and weekend travel (Sun. in the morning).

In Paris, where the price of $28.89 for 10 km makes it the fourth most expensive city for Uber in the world, Uber protests brought fire and riot police to the streets.
Bogotá is exclusive to Asian and African cities that are the ten cheapest cities for Uber. The Colombian capital is Uber's smallest territory in South America as the company tries to explore the market. Uber had a mixed start in Colombia, facing bans and then making a comeback using a legal loophole. Technically, when you hail an Uber in Bogota, you're not hiring a taxi, you're hiring a car with a driver.

What hurts Uber users in New York so much is not that the service is expensive, but that it is more expensive than it used to be. The US Cities category is the 30 most populous US cities where Uber operates, and the UK is the 30 most populous UK cities where Uber operates.
San Jose, CA, and San Francisco, CA are among the most congested cities in the US, but were excluded from the study because Uber did not provide cost estimates for those cities (we checked several times). Likewise, several Commonwealth cities were excluded due to lack of statistics.
For each city, a 10 km journey was created manually. Trip is from the city center as determined by Uber's calculator. From this point, using Google Maps, a location about 10 km from the city center by car is selected.
For all cities, each address is analyzed in 3 separate periods in the Uber calculator, for example weekday peak (especially around 8am), weekend low demand period (especially early Sunday morning) and weekday afternoon off-peak . All times are local. Values for UberX rides are recorded.
