Denise Dixon's experience of seeing her friends and family struggle with breast cancer inspired her to find a better way to give back to other women fighting this disease.
Dixon, who owns the Las Vegas Cosmetology Center, started the Wig-a-Thon five years ago to give breast cancer survivors a day of free beauty treatments — while teaching her students the basics of making, installing and applying wigs to make. .
"Breast cancer has always been something close to my heart and seeing women and what they go through and just the journey and how it affects their body ... get up and try to look good because they're so focused on trying to feel good," said the Dixon. "So that's why this became my passion, to give them a day where they can feel good and look good."
This year marks the fifth time Denise Dixon and the Cosmetology Institute of Las Vegas have hosted a "Wig-a-Thon."

The students use real human hair that Dixon gets from a vendor and carefully sew the hair onto the wig cap until the entire style is complete. Some students can finish a wig in three hours, while others can take eight hours to finish a wig, Dixon said.
"We take them through the basic process of making wigs, starting with the mannequin head, wig caps, needles and thread," Dixon said.

This year, 10 breast cancer survivors selected by members of the public will be treated to a breakfast and facial at the Las Vegas Cosmetology Center. They will be fitted with custom wigs of their choice. The women will also have the opportunity to receive additional beauty services before the lunch and photo shoot. Dixon said 10 more wigs will be donated to the American Cancer Society.
While Dixon wants to give survivors a special day, she also uses breast cancer awareness to spread the word about early detection. For the first time, Nov. 5, Mammovan of Nevada Health Centers will be on campus. Dixon said he will pay for anyone in the community without health insurance to get a mammogram at the 3D drive-thru station.

"It affects me a lot. Every year (my family and I) go through the cancer journey," Wright said. "It will be a better feeling for me to help the people who are affected by it and make them smile for a day."
Dixon said she longs for her students to experience the joy she feels every year when she meets breast cancer survivors and sees their smiles after a fun day of glam.
"There's no money to pay me for what I do, I'm determined," Dixon said. "My reward is that I have the opportunity to put a smile on someone's face."
