"The flag is a symbol of national unity because it represents, without doubt, all Canadians without distinction. Race, language, creed or opinion." On February 15, 1965, Senate Speaker Maurice Bourget lowered the Canadian Red Ensign and raised the new Maple Leaf flag on Parliament Hill in Ottawa.

Defining the flag as a symbol of national unity, Bourget touches on the question of unity that is not easy to answer in the context of a country like Canada. As a multi-racial and multi-cultural nation, Canada's search for unity regarding its citizens' language is not easily identifiable as a question of unity in most cases.

Whenever we focus on national unity, we must focus on the elements that define a country, especially those that enable communication among its citizens and identity resulting from the use of language.

This work focuses on the language used in Canada and the search for a Canadian identity. It provides some historical facts and focuses on the official languages spoken in Canada, their differences and similarities with US and UK English. Furthermore, the problems arising from Canadian bilingualism are described and Canadians are asked whether and how they experience English as a distinct entity:

After the founding of Quebec in 1608, French settlers spread around the St. Charles and fought with the British colonists. As English immigration to French colonies increased, tensions between the two colonial powers culminated in the Seven Years' War (1756 - 1763). According to the Treaty of Paris in 1763, all French colonies were annexed by England. The Constitution Act of 1791 divided Quebec into two provinces (Upper and Lower Canada) which resulted in further political conflict. The Act of Union of 1840 resulted from various rebellions in 1837 and 1838 in Upper and Lower Canada. In 1867, the British North America Act (BNA) defined two cultures and their bilingual and linguistic minorities in Quebec and Ontario. Canada gained independence in 1931 with the Statute of Westminster. In 1980 the people of Quebec rejected the "Parti Québécois" plan to secede from Canada. BNA 1867 was replaced by the new Canadian constitution in 1982. Today, Canada consists of ten provinces: Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, and Saskatchewan (8- McConnell 10; Encarta Encyclopedia, keyword "Canada").

Based on the year 2001, Canada has an area of 9,976,140 square kilometers and a population of 31,592,805. In 1992, 82.4% of the Canadian population was white, 11.2% Asian, 3.8% American, and 2.7% black.

Following McConnell, the first great segment of English-speaking people migrated across the Atlantic Ocean to New England and other North American colonies. Immigrants brought their regional and local varieties of Elizabethan English, developed over generations, while adding their own innovations. As North Americans moved westward, speech defined various regional dialects in the present-day United States (McConnell 8).

The end of the American Revolutionary War in 1783 saw a mass migration of civilian and military refugees ("United Empire Loyalists") from the new "United States" to the two provinces of "Nova Scotia" and "Canada". The flood of immigrants from England, Ireland and Scotland in the 1830s and 1840s also left an impression on Canadian speech. Political and economic relations, anti-American and loyal pro-British sentiments, and the prestige of Native English have always influenced the language of Canadians, but the foundation of Canadian English is North American English (McConnell 8 - 9).

Canada is a bilingual country where English and French are both official languages. As the historical facts given above have already shown Canadian bilingualism is a social and political issue.

The language question led to discontent on the part of the French-speaking population, with English-speaking Canadians being discriminated against, resulting in disadvantages in relation to professional matters. French-speaking Canadians feel like "second-class citizens" because of their command of the English language. In 1963, the "Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism" ("B&B Commission") was established by Prime Minister Lester Pearson. This commission was tasked with finding a balanced situation for both cultures. The findings of the B&B Commission, based on the "Official Languages Act" of 1969, were published in a report from 1967. The Bilingual Act obliges English and French to be accepted as the same official language, the authorities should move to bilingualism step by step and develop language education (McConnell 8 – 10 / Chiswick 180 - 184 / Crystal 95).

The situation in 1996 illustrates the distribution of English and French in Canada: 84% of Canadians have knowledge of English, while only 14% speak French, and only 2% do not know the official language. 97% of French speakers live in Quebec (Brinton/Fees 12.2).

Modern Canadian English is very similar to the English spoken throughout North America, and it may be difficult for people outside of the region to distinguish between the two varieties. Following Crystal, there are two reasons for the similarity between the two types: on the one hand, it may always have been, early Canadian English formed the original New England speech from a mixture of British English dialects. And conversely, similarities with the dialects of many 19th-century American immigrants may be more distinctive variations (95) and may arise through numerical strength.

Although there are similarities between Canadian and US English, there is no identity between them; Yet there is no general statement that can distinguish them (Crystal 95). Below, the main differences will be discussed.

To identify this, certain language features are used across Canada and others vary with respect to factors such as age, gender, education, occupation, geographic location and political perspective. Following crystallography, four types of specificity will be identified (340):

3) Some features are identified with US English and are used only by a segment of the population.

4) Some features are identified with UK English and used only by segments of the population

This presents real difficulties for anyone wishing to generalize about categories 3) and 4) Canadian English (340). Let's see how the points-based immigration systems in the UK and Canada differ in this article. While the UK only announced a points-based system in 2020, Canada has used it successfully for years to issue visas to prospective immigrants.

Under the system implemented in the United Kingdom in 2020, people wishing to immigrate there must meet certain eligibility requirements.
