Over the past decade, I've seen MacBook designs come and go. 12-inch MacBook quietly disappears after three generations; Plastic (Apple prefers "polycarbonate") 13-inch MacBooks are replaced by aluminum; And I'm old enough to remember the great 17-inch MacBook Pro, which was killed off in 2012 after years of get-it-or-not-get-it drama. But one product I've been thinking about for a long time is the 15-inch MacBook Pro. This flagship all-in-one laptop has been around since 2006, and I've reviewed nearly every upgrade and update since then. And while we all knew a 16-inch MacBook was coming, the fact that it replaced the 15-inch model entirely — leaving Apple without a 15-inch laptop in its current lineup — was still a shock to the system.

The new 16-inch MacBook Pro is one of the largest MacBook feature packages. The shape, size and weight are close to the Pro 15 inches, a well-defined standard for high-end laptops that are mainly connected to the desktop, but sometimes have capabilities. The screen is close to the gone but not forgotten 17-inch MacBook Pro, the classic large-screen system that readers still email me at least once or twice a year. The 3,072x1,920 Retina display has plenty of pixel real estate, close to the 5K screen on iMacs.
And perhaps most importantly, the keyboard is...different. No, it's not the classic MacBook Pro keyboard of last year. In fact, it is never as good as you remember. It's not the long-range butterfly mechanical keyboard that's been creeping into every MacBook model since 2015. Apple says this new version is based on the stand-alone Magic Keyboard that the company includes with its iMac desktops and sells separately (yes, there's also a Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad — frankly, everything has always been Disney for me).

Both the Magic iMac keyboard and the new MacBook Pro keyboard use slide switches under the keys, instead of multi-button butterfly switches. The latter is prone to all sorts of problems, from stuck and dead keys to a general lack of exciting tactical feedback. Apparently one of my biggest hangovers was letting go of the butterfly keyboard and admitting that my personal relationship with it wasn't a bad one.

Earlier this year, I put on a butterfly keyboard protection, at least from the extra wear and tear that makes it seem as useful as trying to type on a scratched keyboard on the street. I said:

After just one day of typing on the new Magic Keyboard on my 16-inch MacBook Pro, I'm ready. To make the butterfly keyboard back to disaster. That's because the new keyboard is positively beautiful, which is not a compliment I offer lightly. In other words, my first thought this morning while writing this review of the 16-inch Pro was, "Where were the last four years?"

The feel is definitely closer to the modern MacBook keyboard than the classic. When looking at all three sides, it looks like a butterfly design, with low and wide buttons. If anything, this new design combines both, with keys that are smaller in surface area than the bubble version, but larger than the old version. So, key travel (a term often used as shorthand for how far you can press the keyboard, even though it's a long way before the button is activated) is 1mm, which seems like a happy medium. A new rubber pad is under each key, and each key can be removed and replaced (I haven't tried it yet), which should at least reduce the problem of dust and debris causing sticky keys. But seriously, stop coughing up your laptop, you monster.
No doubt there will be many long-term decisions for this new keyboard from many think tanks, but from my first 24-hour impressions, it's very good.
However, peace has not been restored to the galaxy keyboard MacBook. Welcome to the wonderful world of ... keyboard splitting! Now the 16-inch MacBook Pro has a new and improved keyboard, while the MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro both have a smaller version of the keyboard. The only reason there isn't much confusion about the MacBook keyboard is that these are the only MacBooks left this year after the 12- and 15-inch cuts. That automatically makes a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro 13-inch purchase a compatible experience, since there's a 99.9% chance that this new keyboard model will arrive on those systems next year (not that Apple will do anything like that when I ask). The rest of the touch panel remains as attractive as ever. The support for the application is reasonable, but it is necessary to learn new functions, and the whole installation only serves to remind us that this is one of the main computer platforms without a touch screen. The laptop's built-in speakers are nothing to write home about, but with tweaked speaker placement to cancel out high-volume noise, this is definitely a good-sounding laptop. Apple claims good noise reduction and noise reduction for the built in three mic array as well, but I haven't had a chance to test it yet.
Screens are getting bigger, processors are getting more powerful, graphics are getting better. That's great, but also at odds with longer battery life, a major selling point for any laptop. The CPU and other components can become more powerful, with more performance per watt, operating system tweaks can better manage battery life, and even low-power displays can add hours of life.

But the sure way to increase battery life is to add a bigger battery. The new 16-inch MacBook Pro reaches the logical limit with a 100 watt-hour battery (consisting of four cells each) and promises 11 hours of battery life, longer than the previous 15-inch Pro.
Why not bigger? Apple has hit some walls in battery capacity. The US Federal Aviation Administration limits the capacity of lithium batteries to 100 watt-hours (and even then, you have to carry them; they can't be in checked bags). A laptop that can't fly has a very limited audience, so the MacBook Pro is unlikely to appeal.
