In case you need to repair a crack in your driveway, don't worry - the job is easy. Assuming your driveway consists of asphalt, the most popular material for driving surfaces, it takes almost no time to repair. Every year, Americans spend more than a billion dollars on asphalt. As a result, asphalt repair products are readily available at most local hardware stores across the country.

Asphalt Patch & Pothole Filler 56 Lb Pail

In this blog, we will teach you how to repair a cracked asphalt driveway in 7 easy steps. To keep up with it, you only need a few simple tools — including highway paving material and a professional rammer. The former is available at local hardware stores; the latter can be rented or purchased, depending on your needs.

The first step in any home improvement project is to identify the tools, materials and skills needed to complete it. When it comes to asphalt road repair, not much is needed: the job can usually be done without professional help, using just a few simple tools. Below, we walk you through the entire process — from choosing patch materials to enjoying the final product. If you have trouble keeping track, don't forget to ask Lou for help.

The first step in repairing asphalt cracks is to purchase patching materials at your local hardware store. Because asphalt driveways are so popular, repairing them is a big job—there are many asphalt driveway materials available from a variety of manufacturers. Our host, Lou, recommends using AquaPhalt, a new water-activated plaster material. Originally developed for highway and road construction, AquaPhalt is now available in the residential market. According to Lou, it does a better job than most other products.

No matter what patching material you use, you must prepare your asphalt driveway for repair. Before applying a patch to the damaged area, clean the cracks in the asphalt by removing unnecessary material - including broken pieces, loose debris and "shrinking asphalt" around the perimeter. If necessary, use a broom to remove excess dirt. No matter what product you use, you need a flat, solid surface to cover with patching material.

When Is It Time To Repair Or Replace A Driveway?

After you've purchased patching materials and removed the debris from the damaged areas, it's time to start repairing your asphalt driveway. Simply take a crack filler — in Lou's case, AquaPhalt — and pour it into the affected areas. Be sure to overfill the holes by about an inch, as you need additional asphalt to properly fill the hole. Later we will compress the patch to make it more rigid. For now, setting up the material will suffice.

Once you've filled your asphalt cracks with a sufficient amount of patching material, it's time to activate the material. If you use AquaPhalt, like Lou, simply add water to the bottle. You can't put too much water in, so make sure it's nice and wet. The process will vary depending on which patch material you use, so follow the manufacturer's instructions. (You'll usually find custom instructions on the patch material container.)

Finally, it's time for some good old physical work! After filling the cracks in the asphalt and activating the patch material, begin "tamping" the affected area to compact the patch. (To do this you will need a professional tampon which can be bought or rented). If you see low spots on the patch, don't worry - just apply another layer of patch material, wet it and pat it on. This evens things out.

Once you're done pouring, activating, and compacting your asphalt material, the highway repair job is basically done. Now simply wait for the material to settle and harden enough to drive. This shouldn't take long. Depending on which patching product you choose, asphalt can take anywhere from 1 to 24 hours to harden. If you use AquaPhalt, like Lou, it will heal overnight (and obviously you can go right over it).

Not all cracks and holes in the asphalt in your driveway require professional skills, especially when you can have your choice of patching products that are designed for those very small jobs. . Additionally, these driveway repair products typically cost a fraction of the cost of professionally applied hot asphalt. Consumer Reports tested seven different brands of Blacktop patches and found significant differences.

A do-it-yourself patch, like hot asphalt, consists of small stones (aggregates) coated with a binder. What differs from professionally applied food is that you pour it into the hole from a bag or bucket and then compact it - all year round. You can do this highway repair with a tamping tool or any heavy object with a flat bottom, such as the edge of a 4x4 post. You can also run back and forth on the spot with your car.

One highway repair product we tested, Aquaphalt Permanent Pothole Repair, requires you to wet its binder (to activate the adhesive) before compacting. This product is the only one among those we tested that comes in a choice of different aggregate sizes (four between 4 and 12 mm). Smaller sizes are best for smooth surfaces or smaller holes; larger, for wider, deeper holes or base layers. We tested 6 mm, about average size.

How To Restore An Eroding Asphalt Driveway

Over the past few months, we've made holes in a section of pavement at our headquarters in Yonkers, New York using a series of square wooden shapes. Following the instructions for each blacktop patch, we filled out the forms with seven products. Then we drove them every day, left them in the weather for a week, and then tested them for shredding resistance—how well they could withstand a stationary car wheel spinning on a patch, as if it were sliding. We also tested the penetration resistance with a round probe, trying to simulate the loading of a wheel such as a wheel or a chair leg. We did this twice, a month apart, to see if longer time improved durability. One control we couldn't, due to the season, was freeze-thaw resistance.

Aquaphalt, which costs about three times more than the others, was the best. It is easy to use and is the best choice of all materials if your repair involves edging or building material in the curb. A choice of four different aggregate sizes also allows you to choose the best size for your particular driveway repair. Aquaphal was the most resistant to shearing, with only superficial discoloration as its coating was removed from under the roll of automobile tire, and it resisted probe penetration the best.

The next best was the Sakrete Cold Patch, which was also easy to use, although slightly less resistant to shear and penetration. It was not as good as Aquaphalt in ultimate strength or for use on constructed pavement, but it far outperformed the other five driveway repair products in those applications.

The others were significantly less resistant to shear deformation and penetration. We suggest that you take them into account only if the material will be used on the part of the highway that has just been crossed, and not on the section where you regularly turn your car.

Cheap Driveway Repair Services Offered By Local Scammers

None of these materials tested were as strong as hot asphalt, a truly permanent highway repair that requires a paving company and may be a better option in the long run. However, if you want to make some repairs before completely replacing your driveway, these materials can extend its life.
