Tips On Being A Substitute Teacher

Interestingly, the criteria for substitute teachers can vary from state to state. Some countries require a degree but allow those without a degree to work as subs. Other states do not require a degree, but require applicants to pass a basic skills test. A variety of requirements create substitute teachers who can be retired teachers, graduates looking for their first job or people working in school for the first time. Regardless of which category you fall into, here are some tips that I hope will help you in this very important job.

Presence in the classroom is a trait that many substitutes struggle to lack. Classroom presence, in the simplest terms, is why students sit and listen to the teacher instead of daydreaming or engaging in other off-task behaviors.

If you asked ten teachers to explain their theories on how to improve class attendance, you would probably get ten different answers. Classroom presence is largely based on the instructor's personality and teaching style, and is similar to the presence of an actor or actress in live theater. In general, a person can improve his presence in the class by speaking with confidence and changing the voice of the lecturer accordingly.

Some schools require teachers to write emergency plans and leave them in the office. Only one of the four schools I teach at has adopted this policy. Substitutes who cannot find a contingency plan to cover an unexpected absence should ask other teachers at the grade level what the student should be working on.

Do this by bringing some important activities with you. It should be specific to the subject and grade level you are going to be assigned to. And they don't have to be worksheets: there's educational value in answering subject-centered trivia questions. Something as simple as Googling and printing out a list of emergency questions can be a real lifesaver.

Students can answer many simple questions, such as the location of supplies in the classroom. If you have any questions other than class work, I suggest you call the office to double check. This is especially true for issues related to layoffs. Sometimes children give false information about layoffs to their substitute teachers. For example, students often claim that they will be picked up and not have to ride the bus. Without a text or phone call to the office, you don't have to deviate from your daily release plan. If you are not sure about something, it is okay to call the office to ask.

Remember, anything important you say to another student or teacher will likely get back to the teacher you are reporting to. Depending on how angry the teacher is, your comments may reach the principal. Change that raises a lot of criticism is sometimes not invited back to school.

You may think it goes without saying, but replacements are often too late. This doesn't say as much about his professionalism as his preparedness. They want to be right on time, but they often don't know the exact location of the school building or entrance or the traffic patterns on the way to school. If you are invited to an unusual school on a Saturday, I recommend that you visit the night before your appointment. Note where the front door of the school is.

Key Tips For Substitute Teachers

I walked into the classroom to find a submariner doing everything from playing on her cell phone to reading a novel to knitting a scarf. Sometimes the teacher leaves a lot of independent work for the students to complete the substitution. If this is the case, go to the room to see if anyone needs help.

Based on the age-old idea that students find it difficult to replace, some substitutes appear in the classroom expecting problems. To counter this expectation, the replacement may try to be very strict. This may also be true for ordinary teachers with underdeveloped classroom management skills. The class manager does not mean to shout or insult students. Except in an emergency, such as a fight, teachers and substitute teachers should not yell at students. Many good classroom leaders learn to use their "parental voice" in discipline situations. This simple change of tone can have a huge impact.

All classes must have a class management plan. Follow this plan. It should indicate the steps to be taken if the student does not respond to the warning. If there is no clear plan, ask the teacher in the next class what steps to take if something goes wrong.

Some classes are more challenging than others. If you have a really overwhelming class, at least consider coming to the room again. Some groups of students respond better to adults after spending a few days together.
