Sacramento, Ca, Sets Record For High Temperature In Heat Wave
Conditions are very dry inland in northern California and seasonally warm temperatures will continue into next week. Record highs are possible next week on Thursday and Friday.
Mostly clear skies were observed by satellite this morning. Temperatures at 2:00 a.m. cooling about 5 degrees in areas of low clouds that formed yesterday morning, mostly in the Sacramento metro area and the San Joaquin Valley. Elsewhere, temperatures will be around 5-10 degrees, especially in areas that still hold a northerly wind like the Redding area and west of the Sacramento Valley.
Seasonally warm weather is expected to return today with highs between 70 and lower 80 in the Valley and between 50 and 60 in the mountains. The overall consensus is that the shortwave band in the region today will move eastward tomorrow as the trough moves into the Pacific Northwest. The NAM3K shows the possibility of more isolated mountain showers tomorrow afternoon south of HWY 50. However, the NBM shows little or no chance of measurable rain. That's right.
North winds of 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph are also expected Saturday.

On Sunday, the patterns match well, westerly currents will increase over northern California as the trough extends up the West Coast and drops 500 mb locally. This should result in slightly cooler temperatures early in the week, however the forecast high is still above average for this time of year.
On Monday, western Shasta County and the mountains east of the Coast Mountains will likely see showers with little impact expected. The city of Redding is currently forecast to receive about 0.01-0.05 inches.
The overall forecast agrees that large ships will lead to continued dryness next week with warm temperatures through the end of next week. Highs are forecast to be well above average for this time of year with warm days forecast for Thursday through Saturday. The 80s and 90s can spread in the Valley. New daily high temperature records may be set on Thursday and Friday. The system will continue to move into the US Southwest and the Four Corners today with localized heavy rain and mountain snow. Meanwhile, very little respite today for the West Coast and parts of the West before a series of systems and moisture hits the area tomorrow for the New Year's weekend, bringing with it the possibility of heavy rain, heavy snow in the mountains and high winds. The summer of 2021 ranks among the 10 hottest on record for many locations throughout interior NorCal (Figure 1). Additionally, the mean average temperature is calculated from the top 10 hottest temperatures ever recorded in Downtown Sacramento and Red Bluff (not shown). The hottest season in Downtown Sacramento runs from June 14 to 20 and from July 8 to 11 when temperatures reach 100 degrees Celsius or higher for four consecutive days. Redding's hottest season is from June 25 to July 14, with temperatures reaching 100 degrees Celsius or higher 20 days in a row.

A significant heat wave occurred in mid-June, with several heat records held or broken from June 17-18. Several places in the Valley rose near or above 110 °, equaling or breaking their record high temperature (Figure 2). Downtown Sacramento had the 4th highest temperature on record for June on the 18th (Figure 2).
The June-August period was the 5th hottest summer on record for Downtown Sacramento, and the 4th hottest June on record (Figure 3). July 2021 is the second highest on record for Downtown Sacramento. Additionally, Downtown Sacramento has had 6 more 100° days so far this year.
Meanwhile, Redding had the warmest peak temperature recorded in July (Figure 4). In addition, Redding has the 7th longest consecutive days of 100 degrees or more.
The number of 100° days this year ranked in the Top 10 on record for Redding, Red Bluff and Downtown Sacramento (Figure 5). In fact, Redding had 7 long consecutive days of 100 degrees or more ending on July 14th.

According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, drought conditions continue in central northern California and range from Extreme D3 to Extreme D4 (Figure 6). The drought categories are due to severe rainfall deficits from the 2020 and 2021 water years. The NWS Climate Prediction Center's Drought Year Forecast indicates that drought conditions are expected to continue into late fall (Figure 7).
