Dental Coverage For Military Dependents - When you -- or your partner -- get married, you learn a new set of benefits that go along with your new lifestyle. Top of the list is the health care system, Tricare and the dental program Tricare.
Like most private companies, dental insurance or dental coverage is separate from general medical coverage. And unlike Tricare medical coverage, which is automatic for each dependent, Tricare dental coverage requires separate registration.
Dental Coverage For Military Dependents
Currently, the TriCare Dental Program (TDP) for active family members and members of Carers and Reserves and their families is managed by United Concordia. (There is no Tricare dental program for retirees. They use the FEDVIP system.)
Your 2022 Guide To Military Benefits
Your sponsor can enroll you in TDP by logging on to their beneficiary registration website The minimum registration period is 12 months and can be renewed month-to-month thereafter Service members can only register as dependents if they have at least 12 months remaining on their service contract
There are two package options, single or family The "single" plan covers individuals, who may be active duty family members, National Guard or Reserve sponsors, or National Guard or Reserve family members. "Family" designates each person registered with DEERS as a dependent. If you choose the family plan, all family members over one year old must be registered. Children under one year old will be registered automatically after their first birthday
If you have family members in multiple locations, they do not need to register. Also, if you have family members who require special medical attention at a hospital or health centre, they may be exempt from this registration. To use this waiver, you must call United Concordia directly at 1-844-653-4061. (The OCONUS toll-free number is 1-844-653-4060.)
It is important to note that Tricare dental coverage does not automatically start upon enrollment. If you enroll before the 20th of the current month, your cover will start on the 1st of the following month. If you enroll after the 20th, you must wait one full month for your cover to begin on the first day second month.

Tricare dental coverage has a monthly fee per user. For single dependent coverage while the sponsor is on active duty, the fee is $11.60 per month and for family coverage it is $30.15. For others who qualify, premiums vary by status
The first month's cover is due at the time of registration and the remaining payment can be made via installments or electronic funds transfer. It's important to note that if your payment isn't processed, you'll lose your cover and won't be able to re-enroll for one year.
Unfortunately, Tricare's dental program is not all inclusive but, knowing this is half the battle the policy has a maximum of $1,500 per person, with an annual maximum of $1,200 per person for accident care. (For this contract year, May 1, 2020 to April 30, 2021, the maximum coverage has been increased to $1,800 per person due to dental challenges due to COVID-19.)
"Maximum Coverage" means the $1,500 that the Tricare Dental Program will pay annually for your treatment. What is known as a dentist's "allowable fee" is determined by the contract between the dental office and United Concordia and by location. How much you pay out of pocket – is determined by the TDP known as the “cost share”.
What You Need To Know About Va Dental Benefits
For example, the cost split at CONUS for oral surgery is 30% for E4 and above and 40% for E5 and above. If the allowable payment for oral surgery is $500 and your sponsor is E4, you will pay the $150 out-of-pocket portion, the remaining $350 will be paid by the dental plan, and your annual maximum coverage will be calculated.
Some services are not counted toward the maximum annual spending and are not subject to cost-sharing fees. For example, semi-annual cleaning is free of charge and does not count toward your maximum coverage limit.
Orthopedic coverage is covered separately from other maximums Instead of an annual maximum this is $1750 per person lifetime maximum coverage You will pay 50% out of pocket for Ordinances the other half will be included in the package
On the cost-sharing chart, orthodontic treatment is listed as 50% overall, and 50% is covered up to a lifetime maximum of $1,750 per person.

But not everyone qualifies for coverage. Children aged 21 or 23 may enter, while spouses and members of the National Guard or Reserve must be 23 years or younger. Also, there is a lifetime maximum and any out-of-pocket fees must be paid
Choosing a dentist through Tricare is slightly different from choosing a primary care provider, especially if you are used to using Tricare Prime.
You can choose the dentist you want that accepts United Concordia. You can travel as much as you want, even choosing a dentist for you and a special pediatrician for your child. Don't be surprised that finding a pediatrician is a bit difficult. When United accepted the Concordia contract, dentists across the country opted not to be in the network because of the lower number of reimbursement allowed.
United Concordia has a mandate that 95% of registrants have a general dentist within 35 miles of their place of residence open for an appointment within 21 days, excluding pediatric dentists who are considered specialist providers.

If the dentist you want isn't available, there are other options. You can see an out-of-network dentist. Seeing an out-of-network dentist may mean you pay in advance for your entire visit. And, if United Concordia doesn't pay the dentist in full, you will also be responsible for paying that portion.
For a list of providers in your area you can check the Tricare website But the best option is a combination of those and asking your local couples group on Facebook for recommendations
