Like most private companies, dental insurance or dental coverage is separate from general medical coverage. And unlike Tricare medical coverage, which is automatic for each dependent, Tricare dental coverage requires separate registration.

Currently, the TriCare Dental Program (TDP) for active family members and members of Carers and Reserves and their families is managed by United Concordia. (There is no Tricare dental program for retirees. They use the FEDVIP system.)

Your sponsor can enroll you in TDP by logging on to their beneficiary registration website The minimum registration period is 12 months and can be renewed month-to-month thereafter Service members can only register as dependents if they have at least 12 months remaining on their service contract
There are two package options, single or family The "single" plan covers individuals, who may be active duty family members, National Guard or Reserve sponsors, or National Guard or Reserve family members. "Family" designates each person registered with DEERS as a dependent. If you choose the family plan, all family members over one year old must be registered. Children under one year old will be registered automatically after their first birthday
If you have family members in multiple locations, they do not need to register. Also, if you have family members who require special medical attention at a hospital or health centre, they may be exempt from this registration. It is important to note that Tricare dental coverage does not automatically start upon enrollment. If you enroll before the 20th of the current month, your cover will start on the 1st of the following month. If you enroll after the 20th, you must wait one full month for your cover to begin on the first day second month.

Tricare dental coverage has a monthly fee per user. For single dependent coverage while the sponsor is on active duty, the fee is $11.60 per month and for family coverage it is $30.15. For others who qualify, premiums vary by status
The first month's cover is due at the time of registration and the remaining payment can be made via installments or electronic funds transfer. It's important to note that if your payment isn't processed, you'll lose your cover and won't be able to re-enroll for one year.

If the dentist you want isn't available, there are other options. You can see an out-of-network dentist. Seeing an out-of-network dentist may mean you pay in advance for your entire visit. And, if United Concordia doesn't pay the dentist in full, you will also be responsible for paying that portion.
