WINTER PARK, Fla. – Students attending a popular hair and skin care school are speaking out, saying they're not getting the tuition they paid for.

Aveda is not just a line of products, it is also an institute where students can learn cosmetology and gain hands-on experience in cutting, coloring and hairdressing.
"When I had two teachers at the beginning of the program, they helped us," Miller said. "He's probably the best barber I've ever met."
"We went without a teacher for a week or two, and then we got another teacher. He stayed for about 7 weeks," Miller said. “He also resigned and then we recently had another teacher,” Miller said. "He was called. into the office, and we never saw him again."

“My experience with Aveda [Be Aveda] was pretty rocky,” Cunningham said. "Many things have changed. We went through a lot of instructors."
The two said during the turnover there were days without an instructor and they learned how to cut hair from YouTube videos.
"We'll turn on YouTube and watch haircut tutorials just to have something to do with the day," says Cunningham.
Paul Villeneuve is vice president of education and operations for "Be Aveda Florida," which has six locations across the state.

"When we came back from COVID, the whole company was hit by the 'Great Resignation,'" Villeneuve said. "Our struggle is to get people to show up for a day or two and then leave."
Even when dealing with staffing shortages, they always have two licensed barbers in the building, though they may be in a different location than Miller and Cunningham, according to Villeneuve.
“The state requires that we have a ratio of one teacher for every 25 students. We like to run one to 12, one to 14 because we're more hands-on, so we're always in regulation," Villeneuve said.
Villeneuve said he has been in the business for 40 years and has never dealt with staffing issues like this.

He met an instructor from St. Pete to help out in Winter Park and they've already hired two new instructors that Villeneuve says will start this week.
He and his staff meet twice a week and spend 30 or 40 minutes with HR staff to make sure they are up to date and have instructors in the pipeline, he said.
Villeneuve said he will make sure all students in this class have the hours they need to complete the program on time.

JORDAAN: I always dye my own hair and I help my family with theirs. I thought, "I have to get paid for this." I was living in Washington state at the time. There was no Institute there and I knew I wanted to go to an Institute. My sister attended the esthetics program and loved it! He told me it would be perfect for me.
As luck would have it, there was a school in Franklin, TN where my in-laws live. They offered us their house while I was studying.
EMMILY: I've always had a passion for hairdressing, but I didn't start teaching until I was 29. I worked odd jobs for a few years. I finally got to the point where I wanted to do something satisfying and purposeful. I returned to my passions.
Parenthood And Cosmetology School: A Balancing Act
JORDAAN: I love my teachers and my school. I felt educated and appreciated. I appreciate how much passion for the industry each instructor has.
EMMILY: It was very structured. I really appreciate all my mentors because they are kind and gentle and they guide me in everything.
EMMILY: After I graduated, I chose to go to a teaching salon. It was comfortable and familiar to have a similar experience to what I had in school.
JORDAAN: Honest to goodness When I say the word "", people in the industry get excited and curious. They know how important we are. taught me professionalism and standards. One of my favorite quotes is from my mentor, Evon Taylor: "Stay prepared and you'll never have to prepare." It became my mantra.

I have been asked several times if I am a student. When I say yes, the response is always, "I know that. You have that drive." Either that fire or professionalism. Or they will just tell how I carry myself.
EMMILY: It definitely shifted to virtual learning when COVID hit. We don't have much time to prepare. When we went virtual, many of my friends decided to take time off. I felt pressured to do the same thing. I didn't, and I saw it and I'm really glad I didn't.
JORDAN: Definitely COVID. I have 4 children, and when the shutdown happened, I had to attend remotely, as did my children. At some point it became too difficult and I had to take time off. A week or so before my contract was scheduled for termination, my director contacted me. He reminded me how much I loved it and encouraged me to do it. He took me back to campus. I am very grateful to Connie for that.
JORDAAN: The mentors never gave up on me. They pushed me when it was hard. The distance from the school made the graduation ceremony all the sweeter; which is more emotional.
Hair, Skincare, Barber And Massage School In Orlando
EMMILY: It was very difficult. You go to school in your home where there are many distractions. I would wake up and physically get ready like I was going to school and do my hair and put on the right clothes to keep with the routine.
It set us back, but it was positive. When we got back to campus, that was when we were originally scheduled to go on the floor. But they sent us back to the classroom for a few weeks because we didn't have much technical training at that point. It was frustrating, but in the end it helped me gain more confidence in my technical skills.
EMMILY: It definitely gave me more drive. It showed me that if I can get through it, I can handle bad days or stressful situations. The fact that I never took time off gave me a sense of discipline and pride that I carry with me in my career today.
JORDAN: I know now that whatever happens, I can get through it. I graduated! I passed the state board and am licensed! It was no small task and it was not just my desire that brought me there. I love my school. I am a proud Alumni. We are the standard.
